Fabulous illustrations -- McToad is very dapper, and I love, love, love the extended machinations necessary to mow tiny island. Again, good for the things-that-go crowd, and toddlers. This one's going to be fun in story time. ( ) This is the cutest book! This was a great book, mostly due to the pictures. The story line is pretty basic. McToad lives on a big island but one day a week (Thursday) he gets to mow Tiny Island. It’s how he gets to Tiny Island that makes the story. The reader then goes through the process of riding on/in the various types of transportation vehicles with McToad as he gets to Tiny Island. It has pretty good vocabulary and wonderful pictures! My favorite part was the flow chart at the end of the story! After he gets to the island and mows it, he turns around and does the same things he did to get there, but backwards. This process is shown to the reader as a flow chart with pictures. This would be the perfect book to use to introduce the text feature of a flow chart. A teacher could read this story aloud to kids and then they could look at the flow chart at the end and put their own words to the story. It might also be a useful tool when teaching a lesson on summarizing or even sequencing. Students could then practice with any picture book on their own. There are many picture books for kids that take kids through a process of some kind—or at least where they meet a different character to do a different thing. Students could draw little pictures from each event and sequence them in a flow chart. Then, to extend the skill, they could learn about a different process—how paper is made, how electricity gets to our houses, etc— and create their own flow chart to show the sequence.
