A #1 NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller! From the masterful minds of Grant Morrison (FINAL CRISIS, THE MULTIVERSITY) and Yanick Paquette (SWAMP THING, BATMAN, INC.) comes the most provocative origin of Wonder Woman you've ever seen-a wholly unique retelling that still honors her origins. For millennia, the Amazons of Paradise Island have created a thriving society away from the blight of man. One resident, however, is not satisfied with this secluded life-Diana, Princess of the Amazons, knows there is more in this world and wants to explore, only to be frustrated by her protective mother, Hippolyta. Diana finds her escape when Air Force pilot Steve Trevor, the first man she has ever seen, crashes onto their shores. With his life hanging in the balance, Diana ventures into the long forbidden world of men. The Amazons chase after her and bring her back to Paradise Island in chains to face trial for breaking their oldest law-staying separated from the world that wronged them. Thought-provoking yet reverent, thoroughly modern but still timeless, the power and courage of Paradise Island's greatest champion-Wonder Woman-is introduced in this new addition to DC Comics' NEW YORK TIMES best-selling Earth One original graphic novel series.… (mehr)

A more interesting reboot than most attempts at Diana. ( )

I'm always willing to go to bat for Morrison, but this might be the exception. The pacing feels all over the place - you'd think from the introductory sequence set in ancient times that this would be more of a slow-burner a la Seven Soldiers, but after that it's pedal-to-the-metal all the way with little time spent developing characterizations or the Amazon world. There's some potential for a really charming fishes-out-of-water story with Wonder Woman traveling to "Man's World" and Steve Trevor visiting Paradise Island, but their interactions are shoved aside for this trial framing story that Morrison seems to be far too taken with for the book's own good. At least Paquette's art is pretty (I like the invisible plane design)? ( )

Enjoyable, but this is kinda an example to me that I'm not going to enjoy the DC Earth One series as much as more classic comics. I had similar issues with the X-Men comics when they kept re-doing and re-doing the backstories, so while this was a pretty volume and enjoyable to read, one book of the series is enough for me. ( )

This is a reboot of Wonder Woman. I haven’t read any of them before and I have hazy childhood memories of the TV show. Since this is an origins story quite a bit of it is told in bits in pieces as a testimony at a trial for Diana on Paradise Island for breaking the rules. All the testimony is given while holding the lasso of truth. Not sure if I will continue to read the books since story reboot was good but there was something about it that left me cold. Maybe it just isn’t to my taste but I’m sure lots of people will enjoy it.

Here we have an updated origin of Wonder Woman occurring within DC Comics' "Earth One" continuity. The story takes place in the present with the trial of Diana, who has forbade her mother and traveled to the World of Man. The Fates are present, as this matter could decide the very future of the world.

Seems to stick fairly close to the general Wonder Woman origin, Steve Trevor, updated here to represent the common soldier of today instead of the 1940s, crashes on Paradise Island and is saved by Diana, much to the chagrin of her fellow Amazons. She takes Steve home and meets her good friend, one Miss Candy, also updated to represent a more modern interpretation.

I feel like the updates are handled well, they pay tribute to the source while keeping things fresh for the time the story is meant to take place. One update I really appreciated was the inclusion of the Hercules story from Greek mythology, as I always wondered how it fit with Wonder Woman's origins, considering that Hercules came into direct conflict with her mother and sisters in his day. It was a nice touch.

Definitely a worthwhile read if you're a fan of Greek Myth, comics, and especially Wonder Woman. ( )
