Make no mistake: Christian Wiman's poetic endeavors are ambitious. From the personal lyrics of solitude and loss to "Being Serious," the long poem that concludesHard Night, his poems examine emotions clearly, without sentimentality. A profound reverence for form and passion for poetry are evident in these artfully shaped poems that contain and find meaning in the unwieldy and inexplicable. This is a beautifully written collection, it's separated into three main parts and it all flows together nicely. This was my first introduction to Christian Wiman, but it certainly wont be my last! ( )

Reading Hard Night there is a connection of intensity of content and form. Reading Wiman can, at times, feel like sliding through a corridor of granite, lines hewn solidly hewn together. Where he takes risks, as in the long form tragi-comic piece about a man named Serious, there is the satisfaction of experiencing levity and sorrow. However, I could've done without the poem about golf.

I enjoyed his poetry, not as much as others, but it was far above that average dribble. ( )
