This a fun, slightly morbid read going into the depths of presidential assassination's. At times, it was a bit much, where the fine line of interesting sarcasm turned into annoyance, but over all, Its a great read to learn about why a president was assassinated, how it was commemorated, and the theories that surrounded it.

I especially liked that Sarah Vowell managed to convince friends and family on these trips, and while not always thrilled to be there, there were always happy to help. ( )

Sarah discusses her road trips to locations associated with presidents who have been assassinated (except for Kennedy): Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley. It's interesting and informative--and reminds me again of how little I know of US history. She does take a serious look at things, but there is also plenty of humor. Pretty well done. ( )

Early in my book blogging career, I discovered the quirky delights of Sarah Vowell. Assassination Vacation was the last of her works on my list. As it has been several years since I read or listened to anything by her, I was looking forward to her take on presidential assassinations. What she had to say was perfectly irreverent and insightful; all I kept thinking was how different things were from when she wrote the book. Several times within its pages, she expresses her disgust at little Bush and the bogus war he thrust the country into. Our naivete about little Bush being the worst thing to happen to this country made me want to laugh and weep. It was difficult listening to her wax poetic about Lincoln, knowing he wasn’t quite the hero people thought he was. My distracting thoughts prevented me from absorbing almost everything she said, including the names of the various assassins. My experience is a situation where the problem is all me and not the author’s fault. Or maybe I should blame our most recent political history for distracting me from learning about other historical moments because I was too busy imagining how different things could be had someone assassinated 45. This past year my step daughter had to write a paper on a US President. She bent the rules a bit and chose Alexander Hamilton. I wondered what President I would have chosen?

I would have chosen someone more obscure. Maybe McKinley (the topic of the third assassination)? Actually, I found the McKinley section boring. Garfield's section lackluster (second section). Lincoln's assassination? That section was inspiring.

OK, Lincoln would be a popular choice for a high school student to do a biography on. But after reading this book, I wonder if I could have got an exception and talked about Lincoln's assassin, the infamous John Wilkes Booth.

The motive, the getaway, the conspirators ... Ironically, I was in NYC while reading the book and got see some of the landmarks that Sarah Vowell included in the book. The Lincoln/Booth sections made me work on my own history (family tree).
Sarah Vowell reads like a favorite high school teacher who really loves sharing her take on history. Rather than forcing me to memorize a bunch of dates and the US Presidents ... she makes me want to devour (American) history. She has a way of connecting dots to make them meaningful.

I love Sarah Vowell. I was laughing from page one. But, other books got in my way. So, later for this one.

In the Middle Ages, relics spawned a continentwide craze. Devotees packed their bags and streamed out of towns and villages, thronging the pilgrimage trails. For most, a journey to see the relic of St. Thomas or St. James offered the only valid excuse for leaving home.

"The real Lincoln exists in my mind," Pris said.
I was astonished. "You don't believe that. What do you mean by saying that? You mean that you have the idea in your mind."
She cocked her head on one side and eyed me. "No, Louis. I really have Lincoln in my mind. And I've been working night after night to transfer him out of my mind, back into the outside world."
