Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares. Oomza University has wronged the Meduse, and Binti's stellar travel will bring her within their deadly reach. If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making, she will need both the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself--but first she has to make it there, alive.… (mehr)

I've been seeing a lot of positive hype about this book for a couple of years now, so I was eager to see if it lived up to that hype. I'm happy to report that it was very enjoyable. It's interesting because there's really 2 major alien cultures here - the Meduse, of course, but also Binti's own Himba people. Looking forward to more from this highly acclaimed author. ( )

I enjoyed Binti so much that I quickly forgot it was only a novella and was surprised when it came to an end after only two and a half hours of listening time.

Binti is solid sci-fi. Nnedi Okorafor proves yet again that the white male gatekeeping of the genre has only hurt its development. In 96 pages, Okorafor introduces the reader to multiple civilizations, multiple planets, varying cultures, varying species, and advanced technology. She does all this with an expert hand, and need I say again, in less than one hundred pages. Epic fantasy writers could stand to learn something from her.

I think my least favorite thing about Binti was that it ended. Particularly that it ended in the middle of a mildly anticipated moment. Like all good novellas, Binti was far too short for my happiness – thank goodness there are two more books to continue the story! I thought the characters were extremely well-developed and I was incredibly impressed with the wold building. Okorafor chooses each of her words carefully to evoke the greatest meaning, and it shows in how vivid the story is.

Not only would I wholeheartedly recommend Binti to anyone interested in science fiction, Black authors and protagonists, and fans of novellas, but I am sold on her as a writer. She’s a champion of diversity, skilled at her craft, and a passionate person driving good in the world – I am a fan. ( )

Short but really good. ( )

This is one amazing work of fiction. Okorafor is obviously influenced by Octavia Butler but she makes living spaceships and unfathomable technology that are completely unique and fascinating. None of that works without a compelling protagonist and storyline. Binti's story is more immersive than any in recent memory. I am looking forward to the rest of this series. ( )

While I wasn't aware of how short this was before I checked it out, that's the only disappointment that I could find - why isn't it longer!

The amount of plot and world-building that Okorafor packs into 90 pages is incredible: it's clear immediately that humanity has conquered the stars, there are multiple alien races that have as well, and that not much has really changed on Earth regardless of those incredible facts.

Binti is the only-ever Himbe to leave home, let alone Earth, and is ready to sacrifice whatever she needs to in order to achieve her dream of studying and becoming great. And she'll need that determination when the Medusae, octopus-like alien creature warring with that planet of her university, invade her ship.

I'm always a big fan of diplomacy over violence, and so is Binti. She manages to broker a peace between these two enemies, using a mysterious translation device that bridges the communication gap for the first time in a long time.

Wonderfully believable, exciting, and thrilling, I'm definitely on the lookout for the rest of the series. ( )

"This was my first time leaving the home of my parents. I had never even left my own city, let alone my planet Earth. Days later, in the blackness of space, everyone on my ship but the pilot was killed, many right before my eyes, by a people at war with those who view my own people as near slaves."
