This book opens with a scientist called Charlie talking about Chris, a young scientist who has disappeared. He then shows us a manuscript of a story detailing Chris’s life that explains what has happened to him. It’s a chilling tale of a handicapped artist called Eckmann (he has dwarfism) who is so in love with Poppea a dancer (who is going out with Chris’s dad) that he creates a machine that uses the speed of dark to shrink P & Robert into tiny figures in a glass snow dome. The worst thing then is he is so overcome by guilt at what he’s done, and a desire to be loved that he “adopts” Chris, sends him to the finest schools, etc while all the while keeping R & P & Chris’s half sister alive in this tiny world. A breath-takingly clever novel about power and loss from the author of The Great Blue Yonder. Ernst Eckmann is an artist. He specialises in the art of the impossible - objects so tiny, so perfect, that they cannot be real. A tiny camel passes through the eye of a real needle; a pyramid is carved into a grain of sugar; a tiny polar bear, barely visible to the naked eye, sits on an iceberg of salt. Eckmann works in silence, carving between heartbeats. Christopher Malian loves Eckmann's sculptures. He visits the gallery often on his way home from school to marvel at the perfect miniatures beneath their glass domes. Until one day, the impossible happens - and Christopher sees a sculpture so real that it moves, dances, even seems to breathe... Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
