A wonderfully told story, similar to Kirby Larson's Dash -- about a Japanese family from Bainbridge Island who is sent to an internment camp during World War II. Quite a lot of bleakness, quite a lot of beauty in the support the family gives to each other in order to survive. Dog-love is at the center of the story, and Manami is a talented artist, who spends a lot of time drawing when she finds that she can't speak. children's historical fiction (Japanese-American internment at Manzanar). This is maybe a Farewell to Manzanar, written with simplified language/perspective that a younger child might more readily understand, but after 40 pages or so I was bored. 10-year-old Manami's voice is very reserved and consequently she is not particularly easy to relate to--her quietness is understandable, given her family's cultural background and the recent trauma she undergoes when her beloved dog is ripped from her arms and cast away by soldiers, but even before this incident her story is a bit dull. If not for Manzanar, readers would not have any interest in this particular child's experiences, so basically they would only be reading this if a teacher has chosen it for them. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Told in very spare language, this is a bittersweet tale about despair and regaining strength. Manami is bolstered by drawing, gardening, a loyal friend, her tight family, and a sweet teacher. An author's note addresses the historical facts of Japanese internment. ( )
