This bestselling memoir from a seasoned New York City reporter is "a vivid report of a journey to the edge of self-destruction" (New York Times). As a child during the Depression and World War II, Pete Hamill learned early that drinking was an essential part of being a man, inseparable from the rituals of celebration, mourning, friendship, romance, and religion. Only later did he discover its ability to destroy any writer's most valuable tools: clarity, consciousness, memory. In A Drinking Life, Hamill explains how alcohol slowly became a part of his life, and how he ultimately left it behind. Along the way, he summons the mood of an America that is gone forever, with the bittersweet fondness of a lifelong New Yorker. "Magnificent. A Drinking Life is about growing up and growing old, working and trying to work, within the culture of drink." --Boston Globe… (mehr)

Excellent account of a family history. Makes you want to delve into your own story. A little chopped up at the end. ( )

Even though this is almost 30 years old, I was fascinated by it. His descriptions of growing up in Brooklyn, the immigrant's family struggle, NYC and newspaper journalism in the 1960's, the temptation to "not rise above acceptable mediocrity" really hit home for me. I grew up in that area 20 years after he did, but not much had changed. Not a story for everyone (I was not able to relate to his excessive drinking) but read it just for the prose, and his historical inside perspective. ( )

A drinking Life is a well-written book told in a very engaging way. Hamill takes the reader fro his youth, where he saw his dad have hardships from drinking through his history of drinking.

What I most liked about this book was the journey through the history of the last half of the 1900s through someone who lived through it. Hamill does a great job of describing our society and a typical New Yorker's reaction to the events such as WWII and the Korean War.

In reflecting on the book, I believe that Hamill struck the right cord and tone to entertain the reader with his drinking exploits without reveling in it. ( )

Intoxicating (no pun intended), razor sharp, fearless. Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley would gladly join those that inhabit this tale. Cheers... ( )

Started drinking as a teenager and it controlled his life. He quit without help when he realized he was playing the part of someone else when he was drunk. Excellent read. ( )
