Quirky, fun, and gee, I will read anything that this author writes. The mystery is linked to the old history of this tiny town in Missouri. Civil War or the War Between the States depending on your geographical viewpoint.

Dev has a dimestore and lives with her Granny and her father who is out on parole. She is not fond of her mother who abandoned her with Granny to chase after rich men whom she married. Many of this mystery's discoveries are by accident and some by sleuthing. She has two men romantically inclined towards her so there is competition and she has not made up her mind yet about who she wants to choose. One is currently living with a mentally unstable ex-wife who he is a caretaker and the other has a mother who disapproves of Dev.

Pour yourself a cup of tea and enjoy the tale.

Devereaux “Dev” Sinclair moved to Shadow Bend to be with her family (grandma and ex-con dad) and now runs the local five-and-dime store. The local library closed down a number of years ago due to budget problems, so when a wealthy benefactor offers to reopen it, Dev is more than a little thrilled. Her happiness wanes when she realizes the benefactor is her new step-dad who brings wayward mom Yvette back into Dev’s life.

Dev doesn’t have the greatest relationship with her mom who abandoned her 13 years ago and hadn’t seen since. She begins to have suspicious feelings that Yvette and her husband Jett are not on the up-and-up about their intentions. Yvette also appears to be flirting with her ex-husband (Dev’s dad) which has Dev on edge. If that isn’t bad enough, strange lights have appeared and the town is up in arms with a UFO expert causing problems in town. When Jett is found murdered, fingers point to Dev’s parents and she finds herself on the case to prove that neither can be the killer.

There are actually two stories playing out (a murder and UFO sightings) that somehow all come together in the end with a big bang. Dev seems to have her hands full with her love life (her boyfriend’s mom hates her), the antics of her parents, a murder, and a UFO expert who is always in the way. This is an enjoyable cozy mystery with just the right amount of humor, wacky characters, mystery, and a bit of romance.

Devereaux Sinclair runs a dime store in the small Missouri town where she grew up. It's a town that is inordinately proud of its "heritage," and because Swanson sees fit to use, unironically, the phrase "War of Northern Aggression," I feel no hesitation in pointing out that, if we are going to be blunt about that war, it would more properly be called the War of Southern Treason.

Dev Sinclair is not thrilled when her mother, whom she last saw thirteen years ago when she dropped Dev off at her grandmother's and left town. Yvette also brought her new husband with her. And the new husband announces the apparently benign intention of funding the reopening of the town library. What he wants in exchange is immediate access to the library's archives of town history, without waiting for the library to reopen.

When Dev's own father starts flirting with the ex-wife who abandoned him, along with Dev, when he was falsely charged with embezzlement and manslaughter, Dev is not amused. She's appalled when her father calls her asking her to come to the library, and she arrives to discover him there with her mother, standing over the dead body of her stepfather.

At this point, Dev decides that the most important consideration is that her father should not have his bail revoked. So of course, this means disposing of her mother's burner phone and his own telephone, then calling the police and telling them that it was herself who went with her mother to meet the new husband for lunch. Not her father. No, no. It's important to lie to the police, and have her father lie to the police, so that her father doesn't get in trouble for possibly having violate his parole, even though the texts going back and forth on his phone and Yvette's would have shown he wasn't there and that they both arrived only after the other man was dead.

I like Dev. I like her grandmother Birdie, her friends, and her two boyfriends. I really do. The plot here, once you get past the initial "let's do the stupidest thing possible," is interesting and keeps moving. Of course, part of what's going on is the risk of Uncovering Scandal regarding the Confederate ancestors the whole town is so proud of. Nevertheless, I do enjoy these characters despite their concern that some of their ancestors might not have been traitors. It's a fun, light read.

Important Note: I would not be beating repeatedly on the fact that the Confederates were, in fact, traitors engaged in armed rebellion, if Swanson had used "the War of Northern Aggression" in all apparent sincerity, and had exactly zero characters remember even in passing what the Civil War was about.

Still, as I said, a fun, light read.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Audible in exchange for an honest review. ( )

A classic cozy mystery with a bit of romantic suspense added for a little spice. Whodunnit wasn't that hard to figure out or important, either. The fun was in the quirky characters, the two hunky rivals, and the lively goings-on around and about the town of Shadow Bend. Since this was the first I'd read in the series I didn't mind that it started out recapping the other four books and I liked the whisper of the paranormal near the end.

I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways. ( )

Between a Book and Hard Place by Denise Swanson is the fifth book in A Devereaux's Dime Store Mystery series. Devereaux Sinclair owns Devereaux's Dime Store and Gift Baskets in Shadow Bend, Missouri. Devereaux is getting used to having her father back in her life. Kern Sinclair was recently paroled (even though he was innocent). Things are going well until Devereaux's mother returns to town with her latest husband, Jett Benedict. Jett has offered money (financing for three years) to the town for the library which has been closed (for quite some time). He only asks for access to the libraries archives immediately. The town, of course, agrees. While Jett is busy in the archives, Yvette (Devereaux's mother) is busy flirting with Kern (Devereaux's father). Then Devereaux gets an urgent call to come to the library. Jett Benedict is dead with Kern and Yvette at the scene of the crime. Devereaux quickly comes up with a plan (she does not want her father to violate his parole). Devereaux gathers up her friends and set out to find who wanted Jett dead and why did Jett want access to the towns archives. Devereaux also has her two love interests vying for her attention as well as dealing with Jake's ex-wife, Meg and Noah's crazy mother, Nadine (who swears that aliens are invading the town).

Between a Book and Hard Place has interesting characters, a good setting, and an intriguing mystery (involves the Civil War). I am disappointed, though, by the lack of character development (they have not changed much since the first book). I was hoping that the love triangle would be resolved in this book, but it is still alive and strong. This book does contain some humor (it will have you laughing). Unlike other cozy mysteries, this book does contain foul language and some sex related scenes (steaming up the windows of Jake's truck). The mystery was easy to solve (there were not many suspects). I give Between a Book and Hard Place 3.5 out of 5 stars. I hope the next A Devereaux's Dime Store Mystery will have more mystery and less on the love triangle (or maybe it can be resolved). If you have not read the previous book in the series, you will have trouble reading Between a Book and Hard Place (in the beginning).

I received a complimentary copy of Between a Book and Hard Place in exchange for an honest review of the novel. ( )

Backing out, I eyed the stairs. Venturing into a dark basement after receiving a call about a murder was something a naive young heroine in a Victoria Holt Gothic romance might do, but certainly not me. At least not without some lights and a weapon. (chapter 7)
[Dev agrees with this assessment of Noah's mother's character]
'Nadine rarely speaks to me.' Miss Ophelia's thin lips curled slightly. 'She finds my insistence on facts rather than gossip boring. And she has yet to realize that to acquire knowledge, one must first admit one doesn't already know everything.' (chapter 18)
