Fantasy

I like story and series in general (I’ve read them all several times). That being said, the majority of the female characters unfortunately have gotten on my nerves many times and for the same behaviours, over and over again. Their tisking, braid pulling, and condescending (supposed to be funny?) comments about men get really old. And the male viewpoint of women isn’t much better. Some parts one just has to grin and bare. ( )

The main protagonist has a couple good battle scenes, but most of the supporting cast seemed to regress from powerful sorceresses to bickering children, which was deeply annoying and hurt their characterization. A subplot where some characters join a circus seemed really out of place. It was a struggle to finish this book, but I do want to know what happens next. ( )

a LOT happens in this book, so much to the point where you'd almost forgive Robert Jordan for leaving Perrin out of it. :P It's hard to follow The Shadow Rising, but ultimately there are consequences for what happened there.

Siuan must learn how to deal with her new circumstances, and fiercely fight to preserve the Aes Sedai order.

Rand reluctantly accepts being the Car'a'carn while batting away seeping thoughts that don't seem to be his.

Nynaeve and Elayne move across the map, but learn some humility (a smidge) as well as what can be done in Tel'aran'rhiod.

Mat also deals with memories he doesn't recognize and some unexpected strategic skills.

Finishing this up after finishing Dune makes the Fremen-Aiel parallels a little more obvious. ( )

Sono arrivata al quinto volume di questa saga monumentale ed ormai è come tornare a casa, bastano poche pagine per rituffarsi in pieno nelle vicende di Rand e dei suoi amici.
Il punto di forza della serie è che il livello qualitativo non cala mai e resta sempre fedele a se stessa, quindi vale per questo libro quello che ho detto per i precedenti: i difetti ci sono e sono anche evidenti, in primis la prolissità e poi la tendenza dell'autore a gestire i rapporti uomo-donna come se fossimo in una sit-com anni '50; impallidiscono però di fronte ad un world-building allo stato dell'arte e ad una trama che raggiunge livelli di epicità clamorosi. Certo Jordan si prende i suoi tempi per arrivare al climax, ma una volta lì non delude e il finale lascia immancabilmente a bocca aperta. Di fronte a questo si può anche chiudere un'occhio sui personaggi che agiscono tutti come adolescenti in piena tempesta ormonale.
Finalmente siamo nel vivo dell'azione, le fughe e le attese sono finite e Rand è pronto a prendersi il posto che gli spetta, qualunque sia il prezzo da pagare: mai come stavolta fremo dalla voglia di leggere il prossimo volume. ( )
