"A band of vigilante executioners roam the hot summer nights, abducting evil men who they judge unworthy of living and hanging them by the neck until dead. Sentenced to death is the gang member who abused dozens of vulnerable girls, the wealthy drunk driver who mowed down a child, the drug addict who put a pensioner in a coma and the hate preacher calling for the murder of British troops. But do these rogue hangmen crave true justice--or just blood? As the bodies pile up and violence explodes all over the sweltering city, DC Max Wolfe--dog lover, single parent, defender of the weak--embarks on his most dangerous investigation yet, hunting a righteous gang of vigilante killers who many believe to be heroes. The search will take Max from squalid backstreets, where religious fanaticism breeds, to mansions in mourning and all the way to the secret rooms of power where decisions are weighed about life and death. But before The Hanging Club is confronted, Max Wolfe must learn some painful truths about the fragile line between good and evil, innocence and guilt, justice and retribution. And discover that the lust for revenge starts very close to home"--… (mehr)

Välskriven och spännande historia med intressanta karaktärer. Tyvärr känns storyn lite tunn och man blir aldrig direkt överraskad som läsare. Det känns att det bara är en bok i en större serie. Stabil deckare. ( )

It was quite wonderful to once again return to DC Max Wolfe world. There are some series where characters really make a deep impression on me and this is certainly one. Max is probably not the only man ever to have to raise a daughter by himself. However, I find his situation sadder just because of why he is a single father raising a daughter. A situation I won't reveal, you just have to read the books.

The case in this book is one that really makes you think about justice and what happens when the law fails and the ones that should be punished is let go too easy. When people take the law into their own hands and it just seems so right that they do. When bad people are finally punished. It's one thing when the police are hunting down dangerous criminals, but in this book are they trying to catch a gang of people that are really doing what most people in the book feel is probably just. Since capital punishment is gone in the UK are the group taking the law into their own hands by hanging men they feel should have been punished with death.

DC Max Wolfe is the one that has to take charge of the case when his boss has to focus on a personal crisis and the case will get very close to him and it will take an ugly turn that I never expected. It's a great book, a book that makes you think, but thanks to Max daughter Scout and their dog Stan are there also some lighter moments. And, there is a woman that Max met that could bring love back into his life, but of course, there are obstacles...

This is a favorite series of mine and I'm looking forward to next year and see what will happen next for Max and his family.

Thanks to Random House UK, Cornerstone for providing me with a free copy for an honest review! ( )

A self appointed Vigilante group is roaming the streets of London administering their own brand of retribution. Those perpetrators who have seemingly escaped justice, or received a soft sentence, are kidnapped blindfolded taken to a hidden location where lady luck in no longer in residence and the ferryman of Hades is about to cross the river Styx.

Tony Parsons is a totally unique crime writer. He brings all the love, all the emotion, all the need, all the want from his writing debut Man & Boy, and weaves his style and finesse into the mindset of DC Max Wolfe. We have a detective with the cunning of a fox and the heart of a lion. Underneath this tough exterior is the deep love he has for his daughter Scout and their faithful dog Stan. Parsons writing has the ability to stop me in my tracks and just ponder the words before me...."All parents want the same things for their children. But the single parent wants something extra"....."You can make new friends Jackson Rose said looking at me..but you can't make old friends"......"I felt myself on the very edge of the blackness that lasts forever, and it felt as sweet and welcome as home"...."it is when we are closest to death that we cling most strongly to life"...."but in the end we all run out of time"....

Yet another great read from the delicate hand of Tony Parsons. Perhaps the story lacks a little credibility but the authors skilful technique, and wonderful warm characters makes it a great addition to the Max Wolfe series. ( )

Third in the series from Tony Parsons and the best to date. I liked Max Wolfe from the outset and he is developing into a complex character who is not just a cypher but is affected by the cases and people he becomes invloved with. The plot is a little far fetched but the execution is excellent and drives forward at a good pace.
The fact that Max drives a BMW X5 is still mentioned so often that I can only conclude this is now being done deliberately to annoy all the critics who picked this up from the previous books. Occasionally the asides to explain police procedures and acronyms are overdone and don't always add to the story. But these are minor issues in an otherwise excellent novel. I'm looking forward to the next installment. ( )
