On a winter night in 1964, Dr. David Henry is forced by a blizzard to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy. Yet when his daughter is born, he sees immediately that she has Down's Syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret. But Caroline, the nurse, cannot leave the infant. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child herself. So begins this beautifully told story that unfolds over a quarter of a century in which these two families, ignorant of each other, are yet bound by the fateful decision made that long-ago winter night.… (mehr)

Intriguing story. Well written. Engaging. Can't believe I waited this long to read this book! ( )

There are secrets that shouldn't be kept unsaid. ( )

I was entranced by the author's writing style. I also enjoyed moving back and forth between characters while passing forward through the years. This book was actually a 4.5 for me but I gave it a 5 because I couldn't put it down. It lost that half star because I didn't find the plot diversion of basically adopting a strange pregnant teenager you find in your childhood home believable. ( )

This book could have been good; it is too bad it only lived up to being so so. The writing is actually the highlight of it, and I hope that the author keeps on writing. But the story fails to convey the emotional tension that it keeps at hinting all the time. Yes, I do believe that a secret as big as the one central to the plot would have the power to permeate and destroy relationships, but I would like to have come to that conclusion on my own by following the lives of the characters. Instead I was told every third paragraph that this is what was happening.
Like others here, the 3 stars are for the writing.

I feel kind of bad giving this less than par review, but I didn't like this book all too much. I will admit that it was beautifully written and there was so much description and beautiful sounding prose that I liked, but the plot was dreadfully slow and depressing. I honestly think that the only thing that kept me going after the first several chapters was the need to know how and when everyone would gradually find out about the horrible thing that David Henry did to his family by giving away his new daughter who was born with Down Syndrome. Had the book been poorly written, I don't think I would have been able to finish it. It depressed to read about these people's lives which didn't seem to get any better with age and only seemed to get sadder and sadder as their time went on. No one was close, and those were were seemed to have other issues. Strangely enough, I would recommend this book, but only to people who can read realistic books, and perhaps romance novels, because ultimately, this was a (strange) happy ending. ( )

Kim Edwards's debut novel is a winner, and those who read THE MEMORY KEEPER'S DAUGHTER are going to want to read her next one. Highly recommended.

They'd live their lives day by day, each one taking them another step away from their lost daughter.
... when he slid his arms around her again, he was thinking, I love you. I love you so much, and I lied to you. And the distance between them, millimeters only, the space of a breath, opened up and deepened, became a cavern at whose edge he stood.
Their lost daughter still hovered between them; their lives had shaped themselves around her absence.
She did not know that her discarded clothes fluttered in a wind that he himself had set in motion so many years ago.
This was the grief he had carried with him, heavy as a stone in his heart. This was the grief he had tried to spare Norah and Paul, only to create so many others.
