Nora Johanson looked out the train window at the flat land. Her betrothed, Hans Larson, had sent her money for the trip, but she had only 4 pennies left, and she was hungry. He had said it would be plenty, but there had been many unexpected expenses. She fell asleep wondering what the house would be like. When she work up, the sunset was beautiful! She looked around at the train, but after 5 days it was tiring. It was 10 o'clock when they arrived in Soldall.
It was snowing as she got off the train. The conductor helped her down & told her to get inside before she would freeze. She introduced herself to the silent stationmaster. Eventually he replied in Norwegian...he understood her! She didn't have money for the hotel, & she couldn't stay in the train station...Oscar, the stationmaster, took her to Reverend Moen's house. They walked down the center of the road because it was less icy that way. John Moen, the pastor of the Luthern church introduced himself & his wife, Ingeborge. Nora told him she had come from Bergen, Norway. John had to give her the unfortunate news...Hans had dies of the fever & been buried a couple days ago! Now what would happen to her? ( )
