When a former Army veteran suddenly murders a colonel in New York, he claims that he had to do it because he was being used in mind control experiments. Surprisingly, a top Wall Street criminal defense lawyer, one with ties to the White House, decides to defend the killer, arguing that his client suffered from post-traumatic stress from his tours in Afghanistan and that it's his patriotic duty to assist him. As New York District Attorney Roger Butch Karp prepares a murder case against the veteran, he meets an investigative reporter who suspects that this was not to a random act of violence, but a hired killing that goes to the top levels of our nation.… (mehr)

I have not read any of the earlier Butch Karp novels but I really enjoyed this fast moving page turner. This is a case of the rich unscrupulous ruthless mogul versus the smart no holds barred DA. Throw in a couple of Boris and Natasha types and you have a real page turner. I finished it off in two days. It begins with a black-ops raid in the middle east. During the raid the soldiers, find a strange collection of terrorists and government officials all dead. On their return to base, the sole surviving prisoner and all of the recovered documents are forcibly spirited away on orders from higher up. The commanding officer is concerned and when he continues to pursue the matter on his return to the US, he is assassinated in NYC. The author weaves a series of series of ever converging storylines into one seductive cogent whole. This in the end, leads to an exciting courtroom murder/political expose trial in which the two sides each confident of winning spar back and forth.

As I said this is a great fun read with a little of everything included. The themes include espionage, murder, infidelity, thugs, conspiracies, political and police corruption. The only possible complaint might be a few too many interrelationships and coincidences since almost everyone seems to have a past history together. This not really a thriller but a well told web of intrigue. I would love to read more of Tanebaum's work and would recommend this one ( )

Started in the AM and finished in the PM. More of a thriller than a mystery with great courtroom orchestration and execution. Lots of excellent characters and a plot that charges on. Top level book and series. ( )

When I was checking if I have read prior books by this author, I saw that I had read Outrage, book 23 in this series. I really enjoyed that book as well. After finishing this book, I can guarantee you that I will not like years past again between books by this author. I really like this character, Butch.
As far as attorneys are concerned he is one of the best ones I have liked in books. He gets to the point and knows his stuff. I don't ever want to meet him in court.

Although, he was not the only one that I enjoyed seeing in action in this book. The other person was journalist Ariadne Stupenagel. It was easy to see why she got top stories. Everything from the military aspect of this story, to the characters, the court room drama, and the ending was great. If you have never tried this author out now is the perfect time. ( )
