I tried really long and hard to like this book. Really, I did. The writing style just isn't my cup of tea. The plot is interesting enough, though. Hence the 2 stars. It is humorous, has likable characters, and provokes thought. It is a new way to look at religion through fiction. It is us, our thoughts, our beliefs, that keep whichever God we choose to believe in, alive. If it hadn't taken me so long to read this book (had to reread a few parts) I would have given it 5 stars. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.I wanted to like this book. At times I really did. It made me laugh, and sent me to wikipedia more than once. I like books that make me want to look things up, to learn something new. But that's probably just me. Clarence is a curmudgeon on his way to a retirement home. Somewhere, somehow, on his way there he ends up in the retirement home for the gods. There are millions of gods there, and Clarence makes friends with a few, enemies with a few more, and is sent on quests to save his life. The tone is reminiscent of Terry Prachett or Neil Gaiman at their madcap zaniest, but it never quite gets there. There are some really great scenes in the first two thirds of the book, but the last few chapters drag on. It's worth a read, with a few reservations. I did find it somewhat humorous just not uproariously funny like I was expecting. Zeige 4 von 4 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Finnish, Celtic, Aztec, African, Greek, Roman, Slavic, Hindu Gods and more are featured in this loosely based but tightly woven modern mythology about 33 million Gods and one man trying like hell to live under the same roof. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
