A real tale better than any fiction writer could imagine - the story of the man who provided the Soviets with the basis of the bomb. While not sympathetic to the actual actions, the author does do an excellent job of describing historical context in which Fuchs ended up making his decisions. Fuchs had been driven out of Hitler's Germany due to his communist leanings, and his support for left wing causes was well known when he went to Los Alamos. An equally intriguing aspect of this book is the story of the delay in charging Fuchs and the choice of punishment - all driven by politics not ethics. An excellent book on the history of the bomb. "The 1950 espionage case of Klaus Fuchs, who betrayed British and American atomic secrets to the soviet Union, touched off a witch hunt in the United States that led to the capture of the Rosenbergs and many other alleged spies. The case fueled the fires of national concern over communism, Soviet espionage, internal subversion, and security in the nuclear age. Robert C. Williams has tenaciously retraced Fuchs's personal story but has also established that his espionage was part of a much larger Soviet effort to penetrate and control British intelligence."--Jacket.
