( ) Annie McDee discovers a painting in a junk shop and likes it, hoping that her boyfriend will too only she discovers that he has betrayed her. Then strange things start to happen and it's all around the painting and secrets and lies that people have been hiding for a long time. One of the point of view characters is the painting itself which is an unusual moment, but I found myself guessing, correctly, a lot of the plot twists. Interesting and not bad but not a book I would re-read. I got it via Caboodles/Book Tokens website from Bloomsbury. 3.75 stars There is a lot going on in this book. The modern art world, art history lessons, extremely detailed food descriptions and meal planning, alcoholism, theft, suspense, romance, history, concentration camps, Russian corruption, and a talking painting, all seem to get equal time. (I know I must have missed at least 15 other topics) But it worked. After the WWII, a nazi art thief who steals a jewish neighbour’s identity proceeds to sell many of his stolen art pieces. There are many different backstories in this book which are interesting. The subject of this book, a specific piece by Watteau, stolen during the war, has a voice. That was different and enjoyable. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
"Annie McMorrow, 31 and not recovered from the end of her long-term relationship, is an assistant to film producer Carlo Spinetti and then to his chilling wife Rebecca Winkleman Spinetti whose father started Winkleman Fine Art in Curzon St. Annie has spent her meagre savings on a dusty painting from a junk shop to give to her new, unsuitable, boyfriend who never shows up for his birthday dinner. The painting now hers, talks, but only to us. Shrewd, spoiled, charming, world weary and cynical, he comments perceptively on Annie, and the modern world and tells tales about his previous owners: Louis XV, Voltaire, Catherine the Great among others. The story unfolds through this voice and many others--unexpected, entertaining, and strangely authentic. Annie will have her apartment ransacked and be pursued by dealers, buyers and an auctioneer in an attempt to get back the painting. With The Improbability of Love, Rothschild has spun a dazzling tale--both irreverant and entertainng--of a many-layered, devious world where, in the end, love triumphs"-- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
