A pleasing sense of space around the illustrations invites young readers to enter the tale alongside its characters. Meanwhile nicely bordered quotes ask older readers to recognize deeper meanings and see how the past is still relevant. Young Abraham lived in a changing world—a nice reminder to readers not to expect things to always be the same. Honesty and kindness color his view, as they should ours. And books gain a pleasingly surprising and increasing importance in his life.
I love how the artist depicts the world as it changed, and how the writing tells so much without preaching. Quotes are well-chosen to create their own lessons, as scenery switches from open space to crowded White House lawn. War comes to cabin and living room, and freedom comes at a price.
Younger readers will enjoy the simply told tale and its pictures. Readers from different cultures will find much to relate to. And a teacher will be satisfied with well-drawn maps, well-explained history, fascinating facts and more in the excellent collection of pages that end the book. For example, did you know why there are no photographs of Lincoln from the Gettysburg Address, despite the fact that cameras were already in use?
President Lincoln is an excellent book to share with all ages, and I really enjoyed it.
