Supporting emotional regulation has become a critical priority in effective programming for students with ASD. The Incredible 5-Point Scale was one of the first practical supports to help all partners recognize and teach students to become aware of their state of regulation. The Significantly Improved and Expanded Second Edition of the now classic resource expands on the core idea of the original scale by providing current clinical examples of how to use the scale across different age groups and functioning levels. This must-have resource shows how the use of a simple 5-point scale can help students understand and control their emotional reactions to everyday events. This book shows how to break down a given behavior and, with the student s active participation, develop a scale that identifies the problem and suggests alternative, positive behaviors at each level of the scale. Selected Reading Questionnaire.

The book aims to illustrate how to utilise a simple 5-point scale to support a program for teaching social understanding. The book will give people ideas about how to break down a variety of behaviours into concrete parts to help students and children to understand. Two further editions published 2005 and 2008.

"Dunn Buron and Curtis' The Incredible 5-Point Scale is an excellent tool to weave into a social regulation curriculum. This new, revised, very practical book, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy, expands on the core idea of the original scale by providing current clinical examples of how to use the scale across different age groups and functioning levels... This is a must-have for any parent or professional working with someone who is learning to control his or her own behaviors." -- Michelle Garcia Winner, MA-CCC, speech-language pathologist, founder of Social Thinking, San Jose, California

While this is primarily a guide for older autistic children, it should be fairly simple to modify the techniques to work with children as young as preschool by implementing a Likert scale to their emotions. Not the best for handling the day to day of autism, but if there is a specific activity that needs to be eliminated or controlled in a child, this book can hlep with the tools to do that. ( )
