This book looks at fascinating discoveries that have been found throughout the world. It looks at fossils and rare species of animals in the chapter called “Nature’s Marvels.” The chapter called “Earth’s Riches” looks at the discoveries of items such as gold, diamonds, and silk. The third chapter called “Lost Wonders” looks at areas of the world that were lost or forgotten such as the Rosetta Stone or Machu Picchu. The last section called “Hoaxes and Frauds” looks at different discoveries that were not really what they seemed. Science teachers can use this as an introduction to discuss how fossils are preserved. Students can also use it to start discussions on how silk and coffee are made or how mummies are preserved. Students can also research some of the scientist and explorers and create a short biography. Geography teachers can have students research where the different items are located and create maps to show their location. History teachers can have students research the significance of Machu Picchu and the Inca civilization, the Titanic, the Rosetta Stone, the caves of Lascaux, Tutankhamen’s tomb, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Petra, and Angkor Wat. This book is divided into the four chapters previously mentioned. In each chapter, each item has a two-page layout that contains colorful pictures. Some of the pictures are sketches and some are photographs. There are short paragraphs that explain how the item was discovered, why this item is important, and who discovered the item. This book also contains a table of contents and acknowledgements. This book does not contain a bibliography, which is common trait of this publishing company. This book provides a general overview, so teachers may wish to find additional books to provide more information. I would not use this book as a read aloud book, but I would suggest it for students to use as a reference. ( ) keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Great Discoveries & Amazing Adventures will inform, entertain, and absorb the whole family. Containing stunning illustrations and providing fascinating insights into amazing discoveries and their worldwide impact, it is a fresh take on a wide range of subjects-from the discovery of Machu Picchu, a hidden Inca city in the Andes mountains, to the unearthing of the remains of China's Terra-Cotta Army, long buried since the 200s B.C. The book is divided into four chapters: Nature's marvels (such as the coelacanth, a living fossil from the sea); Earth's riches (such as the diamond mines in Kimberley, South Africa); Lost wonders (such as the ancient cave paintings in Lascaux, France); and Hoaxes and frauds. This final chapter looks at the ways in which people's hunger for discovery can take an unusual twist, for example when experts are deceived by a hoax or when new research sheds surprising light on a familiar object. Great Discoveries & Amazing Adventures is introduced by a foreword from explorer and scientist Dr. Robert Ballard (National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence), and a feature spread is dedicated to some of his discoveries.
