I love how the hooligans come around one by one to respect Roxy and joe at some point the ‘head hooligan’ is asking what Roxy would do I loved this story when I was younger. It is about Roxie who is a girl who faces many situations through reading. She faces real life problems suddenly when she comes across bullies (Helvetia) at her school. She has to learn to outsmart these bullies and this story takes you through this process of her over coming the wrath of the bullies in an adventure. Children with expansive imaginations will love this story because it keeps your attention and adds many interesting and random parts to it that keep your eyes open. It is also a relatable book because many children face bullies throughout these ages. This is the story of Roxie, an adventurous girl who knows how to handle all situations from reading her books. However, when the school bullies come into the picture, Roxie must use her wits and adventurous spirit to outsmart the bullies. This is an adventurous and entertaining book about a young girl’s drive to never let anyone get in her way. This book would give another example to students of how to handle a bully situation. Society likes to tell students that the only way we can handle bullying is to act violent or just not do anything at all. However, this book gives them yet another option to handle bullying situations. Realistic Fiction chapter book Reading Level: 5.3 Recommended Ages: Gr. 3-5 independent reading, younger for read aloud Plot Summary: Roxie is trying to avoid Helvetia and her hooligans by staying after school to help the teacher. When the Hooligans start bullying her in the morning, she gets to school early too. One morning, the Hooligans arrive to school shortly after Roxie, and the school isn't even opened yet. A chase ensues, with Roxie climbing on the garbage bin to get to the window. But the eggs the kids threw make the rail slippery and she falls in. Thinking she got away, they chase her and also fall in the garbage bin. Before they know it, a garbage trucks collects them and puts them in a barge. The barge is emptied out into the ocean and Roxie and the hooligans swim to an island. Roxie knows how to survive on an island because of the stories her Uncle Dangerfoot writes about in his book, but she also has to deal with the two bank robbers on the island who promise to slit the throats of anyone on the island. Will the hooligans stop blaming Roxie for putting them in this situation? Will they survive? Setting: not sure, seems like it might be historical fiction in England, but definitely somewhere with a small island near the mainland Characters: Roxie Warbler - 9 y/o, 4th grade, big ears Uncle Dangerfoot - Roxie's uncle, well-known for his books about his adventures Helvetia Hagus - bully at Roxie's school Simon Surly - one of Helvetia's followers Freddy Filch - one of Helvetia's followers Smoky Jo - one of Helvetia's followers Norman - wore thick glasses, the only person who befriended Roxie Rat and Snake Eyes - two bank robbers who are living on the island with their stolen money Recurring Themes: bullying, survival Controversial Issues: pg 44 "Anybody on this island besides us, I'll slit his throat." Personal Thoughts: This book was fantastic. It was adventurous, funny, and smart. I enjoyed the characters. It would be a fantastic choice for One Book, One School. Genre: Action/Adventure Pacing: Fast Characters: Well developed Frame: Seems like it happened a long time ago or in a different country, mentioned crumpets and tea Storyline: Activity: keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
