Quite interesting and well-written. American readers will learn facts probably new to them about the Walker filibustering exposition to Nicaragua and about the Civil War's effects on India and other foreign lands. Fascinating material concerning the gold rush in Australia, the Sepoy Rebellion in India, the opening of Japan and further opening of China, the installation of oceanic telegraphy, and Italian unification, all integrated with such American events as the construction of the Illinois Central and Transcontinental Railroads. An historical feast! ( )

An entertaining read. The author looks at the transformation of the world as a w u Ole in the middle 1800's. The interplay of the big powers and their problems copine with internal issues is fascinating stuff. He details the close calls of near world war, issues largely forgotten today. The detailing of the bullying in asia, by the non-Asians ( Russia included as non- asian) makes the unfolding of the 20th century very understandable. I enjoyed this and recommend it highly. ( )
