Clint Hill spans a term of service to the Secret Service covering either directly the presidents or those close to him including a vice-president. This is his story and it gives an insight into the behind the scenes activity and maneuvering that not only puts their life on the line daily but protects that which is so vital to this country's governing; of course the president. Hill gives an inkling of the personalities of the men he covered and does let on to some degree his personal feelings toward them. A few things that surfaced consistently was how reckless some of those he guarded were in putting themselves in the potential of harms way not thinking much about the vulnerability of the situations. The other thing that really stuck out was how much time these men spend away from their families, especially traveling throughout the world and at private residences. It made me wonder why they would be married, and the strain it would put on it. But it is the price they are willing to accept in service to their protectees and the country. ( )

Very interesting inside view of our presidents and what it takes to guard them from harm. And a look at the true cost that the agents pay to accomplish this. ( )

Since this book covered events within my lifetime, it was interesting to read about these major historical events from the perspective of a dedicated insider. Well written, a page turner. ( )

Well-written and engaging. The most interesting bit is about Hill's long-term trauma from the assassination of Kennedy and his guilt that he didn't react faster (which was probably impossible but our brains are funny things). ( )

As told by Secret Service agent Clint Hill, this is a very personal reflection of his experiences protecting 5 presidents over a span of 17 years. Hill takes his reader behind the scenes of history, revealing not only his role but also his relationship with the leaders he guards. It's a fascinating account, especially for the likes of someone like myself who has lived through the events he covers.

What becomes apparent is how different each president was, not only in quirks and leadership style, but also in his outlook on life and the goals he hoped to achieve. Also revealing was the personal toll on Hill who was separated from his family for long periods, but also grew attached to the figures he guarded. This was particularly true of the Kennedy family, and Hill's account of the Dallas assassination and its aftermath was for me, particularly gripping.

I enjoyed every aspect of this book. ( )

This book is dedicated to the men and women of the United States Secret Service, past and present, who have worked tirelessly to keep the occupant of the Office of the President of the United States in a secure environment, through good times and bad, without regard to the political party affiliation of the protectee.  You served long, tedious hours, under stress and in the face of danger, without complaint to ensure continuity of our government as directed by the Constitution and its amendments.  No matter the challenges or obstacles, you remained true to the Secret Service code of honor:
WORTHY OF TRUST AND CONFIDENCE.
I am proud to have served in your ranks.

(Introduction) As a Special Agent in the United States Secret Service, I had the honor and privilege of serving five presidents - Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford - three Republicans and two Democrats.
When I was sworn into the U.S. Secret Service as a Special Agent in 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower was well into the second year of his second term.
