Fiction. Literature. Science Fiction. Thriller. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Go beyond the film with a novelization featuring new scenes and expanded material.
As the shadows of the Empire loom ever larger across the galaxy, so do deeply troubling rumors. The Rebellion has learned of a sinister Imperial plot to bring entire worlds to their knees. Deep in Empire-dominated space, a machine of unimaginable destructive power is nearing completion. A weapon too terrifying to contemplate . . . and a threat that may be too great to overcome.
If the worlds at the Empires mercy stand any chance, it lies with an unlikely band of allies: Jyn Erso, a resourceful young woman seeking vengeance; Cassian Andor, a war-weary rebel commander; Bodhi Rook, a defector from the Empires military; Chirrut mwe, a blind holy man and his crack-shot companion, Baze Malbus; and K-2SO, a deadly Imperial droid turned against its former masters. In their hands rests the new hope that could turn the tide toward a crucial Rebellion victoryif only they can capture the plans to the Empires new weapon.
But even as they race toward their dangerous goal, the specter of their ultimate enemya monstrous world unto itselfdarkens the skies. Waiting to herald the Empires brutal reign with a burst of annihilation worthy of its dreaded name: Death Star.

Read it after seeing the movie just to re-hash the plot especially since the beginning of the movie can feel a little confusing before you get a handle on all the players.

Provides a smidge of inner monologue to help flesh out some characters but there's nothing earth shattering here but that's OK. ( )

Spring 2020 (March);

I had been told to expect to be bowled over with a tear-jerker when I read this, but I can out of it with no tears and surprisingly little new emotion that what had been garnered by the movie itself. I was so engrossed by [b:Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel|29662066|Catalyst A Rogue One Novel (Star Wars)|James Luceno|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1509729394l/29662066._SY75_.jpg|50028005] & [b:Rebel Rising|32617148|Rebel Rising (Star Wars)|Beth Revis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1485379708l/32617148._SY75_.jpg|53203858], with its Galen, Lyra, and Jyn backgrounds richly dug into, that I think I went into this book expecting far more than it could ever give me being a synopsis novel.

The novelization of the first of Disney’s Star Wars anthology films Rogue One hit the shelves a few weeks after the film’s premiere in theaters to avoid spoilers, written by Alexander Freed based on the script by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy.

Freed followed the events in the script faithfully, but the narrative was improved with insights into the thoughts of the primary characters of the novel. Freed interlaced the narrative with one-time characters to add actions and descriptions to various parts of the narrative, especially the destruction of Jedha. Jyn, Cassian, Bodhi, and Kennic were the most well-rounded characters throughout the narrative with Freed making them the dominate point-of-views through more appear during the Battle of Scarif giving the event the big time feel it deserved. The added “Supplemental Data” interlaced throughout the book gives additional background information without being the dreaded “info dumps” that interrupt the narrative flow of the story.

Rogue One is the first novelization that I’ve read that is of equal quality to the film its adapted from. ( )

It's a little hard to review something like this in terms of just breaking down the plot because you don't know how much is the author's original story and how much is the screenplay that's then been turned to a novelization, but I've read some novelizations that haven't been so well done and this one was just amazing. So incredibly well-written. Rich in character details that go beyond just description and basics of what's going on but thoughts and little backgrounds and supplemental logs--all sorts of things that I can't imagine were in the movie. I thought he did such a touching job with each character and made tricky subject matter come off well. Just masterful. ( )

I have always loved the Star Wars universe and especially the novels that were written about it. My favorite titles have definitely been the ones written by Timothy Zahn but some of the new ones are nearly as good. This book is great and it really fits into the Star Wars universe, it adds something new without distracting or detracting from the existing mythology. ( )
