"Schneider weans home cooks off their training wheels and provides a springboard from which they can leap out of the box, craft their own distinctive dishes, and let their new instinctive and creative juices flow." --Mario Batali   Everyday meat loaf, roast chicken, and cornbread become inspired new dishes in the hands of The Improvisational Cook. Sally Schneider, bestselling author of A New Way to Cook, encourages home chefs to be creative and daring, to "cook out of the box," in order to create their own culinary magic. Encouraging freedom from strict recipes and set lists of ingredients, The Improvisational Cook is the ideal cookbook for anyone who has ever considered pairing prosciutto with roasted peaches or putting parmesan on french fries.… (mehr)

This is how I cook, using the recipe as a guideline. Having a writer who understands that and suggests alterations right there on the page, heaven. Plus the food is great, starting from fresh ingredients and going straight to something nourishing and delicious without a lot of excess fuss. ( )

I like the *idea* of this book, but I can't say it's been much of an influence yet. I have tried some winner recipes from here, like the duck. ( )

I purchased The Improvisational Cook a few weeks ago and have been reading it slowly. This is a book that needs to be read, not perused. Improvisational cooking is what our mothers and grandmothers have been doing for centuries. The past fifty years with its plethora of packaged foods and fast food chains has taken many of us away from cooking, and our health is none the better for it. I have been to culinary school but there is much in this to inspire me, and certainly anyone else. If you would like to cook but are afraid, this book would be a great help. Sally Schneider explains techniques, how flavors go together, how to keep a well-stocked pantry, etc. With just this cookbook you could be set for life as you learn the infinite ways to combine foods and flavors and also how to use leftovers in creative and delicious ways. It will lead to less wasted food and a healthier you. I recommend it highly.
