I do enjoy a good adventure story from the early days of American history. ( ) 5. Citation: DeFlice, Cynthia. Bringing Ezra Back. New York, NY: Farrar, Straus, Giroux. 2006. [Bird Library Book]. Age level: 9-12 Abstract: This is the sequel to the book Weasel and takes place on the Ohio frontier in the 1840’s. In the previous book you met 12 year old Nathan and his family and the family’s friend Ezra. At the end of Weasel, Ezra has decided to go in search of his wife’s people, who are from the Shawnee tribe. When a traveling peddler comes to Nathan’s farm he learns that Ezra (who is mute), is being displayed in a traveling freak show as a “White Injun” in Pennsylvania. Nathan decides he must go in search of his friend and bring him home. He relies on his frontier background and courage to accomplish the task. Appropriateness: The reading level is appropriate for students in this age range and will expose them to the way that people spoke then with a backwoodsy kind of feel. How to use: I would use this book for students who enjoyed the first book and for others who are interested in reading historical fiction that takes place during the frontier days of our country.
