This is a collection of funny, quirky stories. I believe these may be related to the Discworld series which I haven't started yet. ( )

Some of the short stories were cute but they didn't feel like they were written with an adult in mind. I haven't read anything else of Pratchett's so I can't compare how these stories rate versus anything else he's done. ( )

I somehow expected short stories of Discworld, but it’s unfortunately short stories from T. Pratchetts children’s series.

I bought this book from the Children's section of a book fair to read with my child. That activity turned out to be a mistake. The unfamiliar words and sentence rhythms, along with challenging pronunciations, made reading aloud more difficult than it's worth. The stories sound too British to read without help. The way the Welsh (in American Westerns) was presented comes off as derisive, which wasn't any help in figuring out how to move past place names.

The dominance of men in the cast of characters feels outdated, but I guess that's to be expected. The original dates of publication were about 50 years ago.

Overall, the stories are mildly fun. The quality is in line with what's in today's adult fiction collections of emerging authors. I'm not sure I'd have bothered trying to figure out the jokes for anyone that didn't have the reputation of Terry Pratchett; however, my expectations might have been too high because Pratchett's later, longer, genius works.

My child did enjoy the stories we read all the way through together.
