This is, hands down, the best and most inspiring astronaut biography I have yet read. (And the audiobook, read by Massamino himself, brings it to even more vivid life.) Highly, highly recommended. ( ) Because I didn't choose to read this book and would never have picked it up (it is the 2018 LI Reads book), I think it would be very unfair to rate this. However, I will share my opinions below and my personal rating for it below. Spaceman is a book that I didn't like, but that's solely based off of my own preferences. While I enjoyed and admired Massimino's drive and enthusiasm, I could only read about the screws of a shuttle for so long. Perhaps the only thing that I actually found interesting was the fact that I have to go to space to fully experience OK Computer. My rating for this book would be a half star, but again, that would be unfair. Based off of the ratings, I would say that you shouldn't let my opinion on the book influence yours too much, because while it obviously wasn't my cup of tea, it's certainly someone else's! I loved this book! Mike Massimino gives you an inside look at how hard astronauts work. The physical and mental strength it requires is astonishing. To even get a chance at being an astronaut you need be a PhD, a pilot, scuba dive, be extremely physically fit, and be able to not go insane when you're stuck in a spaceship hundreds of miles above the earth. It made me love space and wish I'd known more about it sooner. Spaceman is a memoir by astronaut Mike Massimino. He reflects on his life and retraces his path of becoming an astronaut. As one would expect, there were numerous obstacles and hurdles which Massimino needed to overcome in order to achieve the realization of becoming an astronaut. He details these challenges and what he learned along the way. Massimino is a loveable and personable man. Watch an interview of him and you’ll immediately see his charm and humility. I listened to the audiobook, which he narrates. This added another element that made his story even more engaging. I loved this book. You will be drawn into this story. You will be inspired to take control of your own life and to set the bar higher of what you can accomplish. I highly recommend this book to everyone! You can read more of my takeaways from the book here: https://samuelpedro.com/spaceman-by-mike-massimino-review-takeaways-and-thoughts.... This book was recommended to me, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Would it be as interesting as it was made to seem? Would an astronaut be as good a narrator as some of my favorite authors and other narrators I've listened to on audiobook? I need not have worried. Massimino is a fantastic narrator, he's passionate about his work, and on top of that, the man can write! I adored this book, because of it, my TBR has grown exponentially with books about space, books by astronauts, and my curiosity has definitely been piqued! I can't wait to delve into more books on this vast topic. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"A memoir by an unlikely astronaut who helped save the Hubble telescope describes his early attempts to gain admission into NASA, his first spacewalks, the loss of his fellow astronauts in the Columbia disaster, his decision not to return to space and his ongoing support of future space-travel ventures,"--NoveList.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit, with all the zip and buoyancy of life in microgravity. Massimino's childhood space dreams were born the day Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. Growing up in a working-class Long Island family, he catapulted himself to Columbia and then MIT, only to flunk his first doctoral exam and be rejected three times by NASA before making it through the final round of astronaut selection. Taking us through the surreal wonder and beauty of his first spacewalk, the tragedy of losing friends in the Columbia shuttle accident, and the development of his enduring love for the Hubble Telescope--which he and his fellow astronauts were tasked with saving on his final mission--Massimino has written an ode to never giving up and the power of teamwork to make anything possible, revealing just what having "the right stuff" really means.--Adapted from dust jacket.
