As a huge Twin Peaks fan, this "authorial fanfiction" was of course on my list to accompany the long-awaited third season, because a good fan is always willing to vacuum up any amount of fluff and nerdery, no matter how tangentially-related, just for the chance to get more deeply into the world that attracted them. Frost co-created the series ride alongside David Lynch, and even if the back half of the second season he did without Lynch wasn't quite as good as what came before, it certainly wasn't terrible, and I blame studio interference more than any fault of his specifically for what went down. I wasn't expecting any of the glorious conceptual weirdness of Lynch, just more Twin Peaks mythology to ponder, and Frost delivered at least a bit of the glamour of the show. While I wouldn't say any of this is essential, per se (the first half of this slightly metafictional dossier almost reads more like a crossover fan-fiction with the X-Files before it settles down for the Twin Peaks-focused history of the second half), if you like the world of Twin Peaks you will get lost in all the lore - the murder of explorer Meriwether Lewis, Freemasons vs Bavarian Illuminati, the last days of Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé, wendigos, Lemurian/Zeta Reticulian aliens, L Ron Hubbard, the JFK assassination, Majestic-12, and above all UFOs, everything in this little town of 5,120.1 people - and can expect to have a good time laughing at all the inside references piled in here without feeling like Frost didn't get the joke himself. Feels weird to have read two TV show tie-in books in less than a week, but Mark Frost clearly had a ton of fun putting this together. I think it lingers a little too long on some topics for its own good, but for the most part this is a fascinating companion to the show. Really curious to see what the Final Dossier book is going to be. ( )

This is a novel disguised as a secret dossier on the events and history behind the events surrounding “Twin Peaks” the T.V. show. Laura Palmer is still here, the original catalyst for the television series, but she is but a minor reference within the greater world of this history. Mark Frost, the co-creator of Twin Peaks, has delved deep into the backstory of the town, revealing the founding of the original village as nothing more than two lumber companies struggling to garner ownership of the vast wooded lands.
There are odd things that occur near a lake up in the mountains, the children that are affected, and the remarkable career in the Air Force for one of them. This book mixes the oddities of the small town, the vibrant characters therein and a healthy splash of UFO theories, R.M. Nixon, Boy Scouting, treachery within various families, Lewis & Clark and perhaps the Illuminati. There are enough conspiracies to leave you looking over your shoulder, but Mr. Frost manages to blend all this and more, together in one almost seamless overlaying plot.
This is a companion to the show offering details both before and after the time frame of the show. As such it doesn’t answer all your questions, but like the pie at the diner, it’s damn fine. ( )

4 stars for any Twin Peaks fan. Glad I read it before series 3 came out, but also looking forward to going back through now that series 3 sits alongside. Establishes the World of Twin Peaks even more, with some nice back stories and more bits of the grand puzzle. ( )
