Before I tell you how much I enjoyed this book I would like to thank Amanda Hocking and St Martin’s Press for my advanced copy of Freeks. I have to be honest I have read a few of Ms. Hocking books and enjoyed them very much. This was not a far departure from her wheelhouse and it was very well written. I have a slight addiction to Roxie even though she is a minor character in this book I adored her spunk. Freeks was a unique and intriguing novel and like I said the sideshow theme fits well with the stories you would expect from the author. Her character description of both the acts in the show and the description of the city is spot on. It is a suspenseful spooky tale that you could really read in one sitting if you had the time. I loved Mara’s relationship with her mom and I loved Gideon and Gabe and how they tried to do right by the women they loved. All and all you won’t want to stop reading this until you find out who or what is turning the lives of these characters upside down. ( ) Received from a Goodreads giveaway This book was entertaining and I did enjoy it, but it was predictable. I liked the idea of a carnival that actually was run by people with actual supernatural abilities. But that was pretty much the only difference from other books of this type. Boy meets girl, boy is a werewolf girl has supernatural abilities, both fight demon, both live happily ever after. I did enjoy the book and look forward to reading more from this author The story of Freeks by Amanda Hocking is one of those stories that had a lot of potential, but fell too much into the YA category for my taste. The older I get, the more I am realizing the YA genre isn't for me. The romance is very rushed (can you say page 2?), there is a high amount of drama, and the characters are developed, but could be developed just a bit more. The story itself wasn't a bad story and there was a lot of fun to be had, but I simply was not the target audience for it. I rated this one 3 stars. Welcome to Gideon Davorin's Traveling Sideshow, where necromancy, magical visions, and pyrokinesis are more than just part of the act. Mara has always longed for a normal life in a normal town where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future. Instead, she roams from place to place, cleaning the tiger cage while her friends perform supernatural feats every night. When the struggling sideshow is miraculously offered the money they need if they set up camp in Caudry, Louisiana, Mara meets local-boy Gabe ... and a normal life has never been more appealing. But before long, performers begin disappearing and bodies are found mauled by an invisible beast. Mara realizes that there's a sinister presence lurking in the town with its sights set on getting rid of the sideshow freeks. In order to unravel the truth before the attacker kills everyone Mara holds dear, she has seven days to take control of a power she didn't know she was capable of -- one that could change her future forever.
