I suppose I should be reviewing this in Italian, but . . . you know how it goes. Anyway, I have admired this book ever since I was assigned to read it in university decades ago. It wears well on the heart and the mind, so much so that I havebeen presumptuous enough to incorporate aspects of it in my own writing -- with love, of-course, not opportunism. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Antonio Fogazzaro (1842-1911) was an Italian novelist. THE LITTLE WORLD OF THE PAST is set during a time of massive upheaval and altercation; many Italians are trying to throw off the yoke of occupying Austria. Italy is about to become unified and independent; the 'Risorgimento' is coming. On the surface the story of the novel is somewhat conventional. A pair of young lovers marries against the wishes of a rich grandmother. The young couple, Franco and Luisa, stand for traditional religious observance in Franco's case and enlightened agnosticism in Luisa's. Their opposing views are dramatized by divergent manners of raising their daughter Maria. These young lovers suffer great trials connected to their child, and to their contrary conceptions of faith, to the point that Luisa experiences temporary madness. Like other of the world's great novels, the surface plot serves as a backdrop that allows the author to dramatize profound, perennial political and religious ideas which push the limits of the romantic and reveal truths. In a significant sense, this novel contains notes familiar to Hemingway's A FAREWELL TO ARMS. Even if PICCOLO MONDO ANTICO ultimately documents a summons to rather than a farewell to arms, each asks us to gaze anew at the divisive and redemptive forces only children can bring into the world. Even in translation, the narrative is rich and flowing, and hardly a paragraph passes without a captivating evocation of both external scenes and the state of the characters' very beings. Upon its release, this work was highly acclaimed, even by critics unsympathetic to his religious and political positions. In 1941, Italian filmmaker Mario Soldati adapted the novel, and his rendering became one of the first giants of Italian cinema. Wiseblood Books is a publishing line particularly favorable toward works of fiction, poetry, and philosophy that render truths with what Flannery O'Connor called an unyielding "realism of distances." Such works find redemption in uncanny places and people; wrestle us from the tyranny of boredom; mock the pretensions of respectability; engage the hidden mysteries of the human heart, be they sources of either violence or courage; articulate faith and doubt in their incarnate complexity; dare an unflinching gaze at human beings as "political animals"; and suffer through this world's trials without forfeiting hope.Through WISEBLOOD CLASSICS we hope to bring hard-to-find great books back into being, and conserve classic works of literature in book form. Forthcoming titles include a lesser-read novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Visit us at www.wisebloodbooks.comWe are wide-eyed for new epiphanies of beauty. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
