Written in the form of an encyclopedia, this book is filled with numerous historic photos of the people, places and events that comprise the history of a small Adirondack Mountain town. The Town of Warrensburgh, New York was created on February 12, 1813. Three decades before that the first settlers came to establish homesteads in an area bordered by the Schroon River to the east and bisected by the Hudson River at the confluence of the two rivers in the Adirondack Mountain foothills. Virgin forested lands offered wealth in timber and tanning, and eventually paper manufacture. This book is about the men and women who brought Warrensburg from a small settlement on the frontier of a fledgling nation to a thriving industrial community with thousands of jobs. It is about the businesses they created and the homes and churches they built. And it is about the sons they sent to Town Hall, the County Seat, and indeed, to Albany and Washington. Within fifty years these townspeople established an academy of higher education. They invited quality performers from afar to entertain themselves. They built hotels, grand and modest, and provided generous hospitality to those who sought the solace and pleasures of the mountains, lakes and rivers of the region. This book is about a town that has lived through high times and low. Warrensburg has succeeded in keeping the personal values of family and caring that continue to make Warrensburg a desirable place from which to face the future.… (mehr)
