I resolved to reading this entire book simply so I could say I did. But it was so boring. Yes, the writing was perfect, but the story was just prolonged and uninteresting. If you want to be proud that you read, then go right ahead. I won’t think unkindly if you give up. :) ( ) Grandiose and ambitious. As I read somewhere, this ~1,800-page long novel is an attempt to showcase the life of humans in all their manifestations: love and death, patriotism and submission, family and politics, jealousy and the vigour of the youth. It is at times whimsical in its approach, swinging between the private lives of the large cast of characters [alert: spoilers]; the description of historical events from an omniscient point of view; and short impersonal “essays” or digressions about philosophy, the military, or the study of History itself. Each of these “bursts” can last from half a dozen pages to a hundred or more, and it's always impossible to predict what will come next: the extemporaneous critique of the ways of the aristocracy at a specific point in time in a particular Russian city, the detailed chronicle of the intimate religious struggles of Pierre Bezukhov (probably the main character), or a light-hearted description of day-to-day life for young noblemen in times of peace. This unpredictability, and the heavy subjects interspersed in the main story, make for a laborious read. After “Ulysses” and this one, I'm starting to notice that a common denominator of great novels is the enormous empathy that the author displays for all their characters. There are angels and villains, treason and abnegation, but all characters feel real and have nuances, and the reader has to love and understand them all.
