Three friends go to a convention and find love--and themselves. Australian friends Charlie, Taylor and Jamie are in San Diego for their first ever "SupaCon." Charlie likes to stand out. She's a vlogger/actress promoting her first movie, and this is her chance to show fans she's over her public breakup with co-star Reese Ryan. When internet-famous cool-girl actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie's long-time crush on her isn't as one-sided as she thought. Taylor's brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there's one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with her best guy friend Jamie. When she hears about a fan contest for her favorite fandom, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.… (mehr)

Gr 9 Up—In this blend of fandom, romance, and coming-of-age, two Australian girls, both high school seniors, attend a fan convention in California, and romantic intrigues ensue. The fast-paced, entertaining story introduces a cast of characters who are all geeks, but in other ways, they are a diverse group of friends. Narrated in alternating first-person voices, the short chapters are filled with authentic language that reflects the characters' ages and online interests, with many embedded social media posts as well as acronyms and terms from the Urban Dictionary. The characters' diversity provides natural opportunities to explore a number of contemporary teen issues, including race, sexual orientation, feminism, and body image. Some of the most compelling chapters are told from the point of view of Taylor, who fears change, hates crowds, and is on the autism spectrum. The setting of the convention offers sci-fi and fantasy devotees the fun of vicariously attending the SupaCon convention as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the experiences of the authors, actors, and vloggers who are on stage. VERDICT Part of Macmillan's crowdsourced imprint, this celebration of geek culture and fandom promotes diversity and being true to oneself. Purchase where there is active interest in fandom.—Theresa Muraski, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Library

Got this one in a book box years ago and pulled it off my shelf today because the cover is an amazing pink and it cheered me up on a day when I was laying in bed sick with a head cold.

Story is YA teens at ComicCon working their way through some relationship drama over a weekend together. For the right audience this is probably a good representation of LGBTQ people, people with autism, people who don’t have perfect bodies, and people with mental health struggles like social anxiety and panic attacks.

For me, as an old person, it all seemed like it was explaining the obvious, but to a teen this is probably good exposure to lots of stuff.

So I think the book may be better than I rated it but for me it was just OK but kind of perfect for a day when my brain was only half functioning. ( )

Yet another fandom book that I'm so glad exists! This was a lot of fun to read, and I totally identify with Taylor in a lot of ways. I sort of stumbled across this book and I'm so glad I did. ( )

This was a really fun book, what made it especially good is that it follows two characters throughout the two stories couldn't be about more dissimilar characters. One is a up and coming actress and the other a socially awkward nerd who happens to be her best friend and the adventures that get up to at comic con. ( )

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD***

I have a difficult time coming up with a rating for this book. On the one hand I adored it. And I read a interview with the author (at the ending?) saying she wrote something she wished was available when she was younger. I totally get that sentiment. If I read it when I was a teenager it would be one of my favorites.
I don't know if it's because I read fangirl not that long ago, or because I'm not a comic-con goer. I think my country just had its first one a year ago... but fangirl resonated more with me. Even though I loved the characters more in this story.

It's just... a LOT happens in this book. And although we only get two POV I kinda missed the one from the third friend... But then it would be more stuff happening...

I don't know. I liked it but it didn't grab my attention fully. And it feels weird to give stars based on merit instead of my reading enjoyment. ( )

To the weirdos, the geeks, and the fandom queens. To the outcasts, the misfits, and everything in between. The days of playing the sidekick are over. You are the superheroes now. You are my people, and this is for you.
