One of the greatest moments of College Rock in the 1980s, Let It Be had a huge impact on the fans who fell under its spell. For Colin Meloy, growing up in Montana - a state that's strangely missing from the tour itineraries of almost every band - the album was a lifeline and an inspiration. In this disarming memoir, Meloy lovingly recreates those feverish first years when rock music grips you and never lets go.… (mehr)

Your adolescence is not that unique or interesting. It's certainly much less unique and interesting than this album, which plays a fairly minor part in this boring memoir. ( )

This was a great quick read for someone who grew up remembering the 80's. I was born in 83 and by the time I knew about any of the bands mentioned in this book I was already deep into the crappy nu-metal scene of the late 90's. This is a memoir for a time before MP3s. It's fine and if you are a fan of The Replacements I think that you can miss it and be ok. I think this book is more for the fans of Meloy. That is why I picked it up and I am very happy that I did. It was interesting to read about Colin Meloy's early years and introduction to good music and his beginnings as a musician as I'm a big fan of his work, but this book really was not about what the title suggests. The Replacements album 'Let it be' was referred to a few times but it was more about Colin and life as a young guy. I really only read this book because of the author and not the title, so for me it was somewhat enjoyable. Would be cautious about recommending to others though, depending on if they were a fan of The Replacements or The Decemberists... ( )

More a personal essay than a play-by-play account of the Replacements' Let It Be, I was totally charmed by Colin Meloy's contribution to the 33 1/3 series. Yes, he took a lot of liberties, and as a long-time Replacements fan I was wont to point out the inconsistencies. But overall, I was smitten by this story of growing up in the middle of nowhere, and finding the thing that makes you feel a little less alone. Isn't that what your favorite records are supposed to do? ( )
