'Barely out of childhood, I had already commited the irreparable.' Beautifully and simply written with an astonishing maturity, this first novel narrates the story of nineteen-year-old Charlene Boher. Charlene recounts her past from her prison cell, a past which had begun banally enough - a great friendship between herself and Sarah. Charlene, a solitary, unpopular, tortured and breathless adolescent had been 'rescued' by Sarah and they'd developed an intense friendship. However, when Charlene falls in love with Maxime, the jealous Sarah begins to test and provoke her, to humiliate her in public and reproach her persistently - until she can take it no longer, with disastrous and shocking consequences. This is a very frank and convincing account of a possessive, ambiguous and abusive friendship.… (mehr)

I do believe that Brasme's novel is very well written, she is very well versed for being 17 at the time it was published. I was rather disturbed at the abrupt ending and there were times that I felt the story lacked some substance. overall, I felt it was a good read, I wouldn’t recommend it to any teens under the age of 16-the story although not graphic, is rather depressing. While I enjoyed the read it was a bit short. I do hope that if anyone is reading this book and feels the same way and gets help. Obsession is a theme in this book that is very dark and I might actually look into seeing the movie. I find that 2019 has me reading things that I would not normally pick up and I am enjoying the new authors and reads. ( )

This book shook and shaped me. It hurt me. It comforted me. It gave me a new point of view. ( )

This was a pretty interesting, short read. This book is about obsession and how it can affect a person once it takes over. However, I am not so sure it is actually about obsession. Yes, the main character Charlene seems obsessed with Sarah, but Sarah is not completely innocent. She treats Charlene like garbage all though this book and just because Sarah "saved" her and remained her only friend, she should not have allowed Sarah to treat her like that. That is where her resentment began to build and then she just allowed Sarah to enter and exit her life as she pleased. I do feel like this book had a couple of issues since it was translated, but overall I thought it was pretty interesting. ( )
