It's a matter of trust. For thousands of years the Darhel, a warrior species conditioned to be incapable of killing, manipulated and controlled the human race. Then the humans threw off their yoke. Now, for the first time, a Darhel has been assigned to the elite Deep Reconnaissance Team commandos. Trust, in a small unit, is vital. And there was no trust to be had on either side. But when the mission encountered an alien device worth more than a king's ransom, it was the humans who betrayed the trust. Now the despised Darhel must race against the team's sniper to prevent the artifact falling into the wrong hands. The Darhel has empathic powers, superhuman strength and the speed of a cheetah. The sniper has years of experience and enormous ability. The sniper can kill. The Darhel cannot. The fate of the galaxy and the human race for the next thousand years rests on the shoulders of a Darhel. The Hero has a thousand faces, but is one of them the face of an elf?… (mehr)

More of a character study than anything else. The ending is a bit too short and the fact that the artifact anture was kept secret until the end is unnecesary really. ( )

This book adds more insight into the Darhel and a minor bit into the future of the series. It is based long after the posleen attacks on earth. ( )

This is a case of lots of words for very little return. A novel length short story that reveals very little about the universe the story is set in. After the first 4 books in this series, this is kind of a let down. Taking place far in the future of the prior Aldenata Legacy books, this is a slow, monotonous book. This matches what I would imagine the actual scenario used in the book would feel like in reality, but it just doesn't seem to make a good book, in my opinion.

The majority of the "main" characters are merely one-shot wonders, if that. Fluff, filler, shallow, target dummies all are applicable terms, as well. There is no real point of attachment to any of them before they exit the story. The first approximately half of the book could probably have been condensed down into no more than a chapter, and possibly a short one at that. The latter half of the book wasn't much better.

Overall, you probably could skip this one and not be any worse off than if you did read it. ( )
