For Bixby Alexander Tam (nicknamed Bat), life tends to be full of surprises -- some of them good, some not so good. Today, though, is a good-surprise day. Bat's mom, a veterinarian, has brought home a baby skunk, which she needs to take care of until she can hand him over to a wild-animal shelter. But the minute Bat meets the kit, he knows they belong together. And he's got one month to show his mom that a baby skunk might just make a pretty terrific pet.… (mehr)

This book is about a young boy with autism. His mom is late from work one day and he becomes very frustrated. He relies on structure, it keeps him calm. This book deals with many things such as divorced parents, children with invisible disabilities and so much more. Throughout the book bat learns how to deal with human emotions as well as how to empathize for someone. Understanding that other people have feelings too, even if they do not show them the same way he does. This book would be a great read aloud. It would raise autism awareness in the classroom as well as learning how to commuicate with each other when our feelings are involved. ( )

When Bat's veterinarian mother brings home a newborn skunk kit, Bat immediately falls in love, while his older sister Janie complains that skunks are stinky. Bat begs his mom to let them keep the skunk instead of handing it over to the wild animal rescue operation, and he even writes to a world skunk expert to make his case. Bat is a unique individual who displays autistic behaviors (flaps arms/hands when excited, dislikes loud noise, likes routine); he attends a private school, where his teacher, Mr. Grayson, is mostly understanding. Another student in Bat's class makes overtures of friendship, which Bat at first doesn't recognize, but the two end up bonding over their affection for Thor and interest in skunks in general; the story ends on a sweet note. Sequel(s) to follow.

This story is about a boy named Bat. Bat is a boy with autism, and normally when a character of a story has autism or a disability, they are negatively written about or they are not important characters in the story. That is not a problem in this case. The author has written about Bats character in a positive way and there is no insults or discrimination. The way this book was written is adorable and heart warming. Bat's mom is a veterinarian and brings home a baby skunk in hopes to raise it until they can take it to the shelter, but Bat insists on keeping it as a pet because feels that they are similar. This is labeled as a diversity picture book and when I thought of diversity, I usually think of culturally or ethically, but having autism or a learning disability never crossed my mind as diverse until now after I put some thought into it ( )

Cute book about a coming of age story for a boy and his bond with a pet bat. ( )

This is a sweet and charming story that helps children understand how someone on the autistic spectrum views the world. It's a must for every K to 5 library. ( )
