I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book and I thought the concept was a really fun choice for a good cause. Each page contained an illustration and the illustrator's reflection on his or her dog. I didn't think the title was quite accurate because in some cases the illustrators were not bragging about their dogs but in fact talking about dogs that ran away years ago. Overall I think there are several good examples of narrative nonfiction, and each student in my class was assigned a different illustration and reflection and then shared with the class their thoughts on the point of view and relationship between the illustrator and his/her dog. The illustrations were really great, but some of the narratives were boring and didn't do the author's introduction justice by falling short of the book's goal. Overall, though, it was an entertaining and positive read and it completely fit in with the unit I'm writing, "Do Dogs Dream? Exploring the human-canine connection."
