I enjoyed the characters and the idea, but I thought the short story ended in an odd spot. I'd have preferred that Gabe get to some shelter before the story ended. Still, if I came across another book in the series, I would probably read it just because the premise is so interesting. ( )

How would you handle the a solar flare? The possibility of the modern world being changed as we know it? Who would you tell?
I asked myself these questions, while reading this fast paced, thrilling prequel to Dark Shadows. Overshadowed makes the reader wonderful about how they would handle the scenario and if they would behave the same as the characters.

Gabe is our primary character, he is a level headed and holding a huge secret. There is a coming darkness but he can't share with anyone. He is also going undercover, as an agent for the government, he needs to leave his life fast. Gabe does this but thankfully leaves hints and his cat for Lenora, his neighbor. Gabe gave this calming present of experience and training to me as a reader. He may not know the extent of what is coming, but he is the one I would want to be close to when it happened.

Lenora, Gabe's neighbor knows something is very wrong. Gabe has left before but he has never left in such a way that gave her chills. Seeing the hints he left her in his apartment, Lenora decides she must act. Quickly, she attempts to warn her family, and a neighbor. She is kind, and takes precautions for what she thinks is coming. There is a part where the reader will quickly release the kindness of Lenora's heart and her want to help those that can't help themselves.

I felt as though these two characters were the ones I would want to be friends with if I was a character in the book. I found myself answering what if questions during this quick book, and then researching what a solar flare could really do. Vannetta Chapman did a great job in providing realistic details that won't concern a reader but will make them curious. Readers that love books with suspense, thrilling dystopian style book will gravitate to this series and this prequel.

Overshadowed by Vannetta Chapman is the prequel to The Remnant series. Gabe Thompson is at the barber in San Antonio, Texas when he gets the message. Operation Nightshade has begun, and he has one hour to get his belongings and get to the base. He quickly leaves heads home to his apartment. He gathers up his cat, Oliver and knocks on his neighbors. Lenora Diaz has watched Oliver for him before and knows the drill. Gabe wants to warn her, but he knows that he cannot say anything. He can give her a little hint though. Gabe gets to Lackland Air Force Base for the briefing. He has been preparing for this mission for two years. Lenora waits an hour and then checks Gabe’s apartment. When she sees the provisions, Gabe has stockpiled, Lenora knows something big is about to happen. Things are about to change.

Overshadowed is not a book that I would normally read. I have never read a dystopian novel. The blurb on this book reminded me of a television show that I enjoyed (and was upset it when it was canceled). So, I thought I would give Overshadowed a try (plus it was free on Amazon). I was pulled right in to this story and when it ended I wanted more. The novel is well-written and intriguing. Vannetta Chapman draws the reader into the story with the plot and characters. I give Overshadowed 5 out of 5 stars. I will definitely be reading the rest of The Remnant series. Be forewarned that the story will make you want to go shopping to stockpile provisions! ( )
