“Welcome to Math 101 ,” said Kent Mitchell as he stood before the class. For some reason he could not put his finger on, he found himself acutely uncomfortable. Why? This group was, on surface of it, like any other class of freshmen he had faced in his last two years as an instructor at Buford Junior College. And, yet, this time there was a difference.
He went on discussing the course requirements, letting his eyes study the face of each of the thirty students in turn. They were the usual crop, young girls just out of high school and a little too made up, trying to look adult enough to pass for what they had not quite gotten used to being - college freshmen, older men and women back for another try at college, looking nervous and acting out of place, and the other types Kent had grown used to seeing.
He liked them all on sight. They were his to teach. There was only one type of student which bothered…
