Fiction. Romance. HTML:

Lark Wainright, twenty-three, has nightmares. She used to be fearless. But while overseas for her nonprofit employer, she was kidnapped and held at gunpoint in a dusty shack. Everyone has an opinion about what might have happened to her there, but she's not saying much. She's too consumed by guilt to talk about it.

When her best friend offers her a stay at the Shipley orchard in exchange for help at the farmers' markets, Lark jumps into her little car and heads to Vermont. Unfortunately, the night terrors don't stop. Desperate to keep her fragile state a secret from those who know her best, she relies on the most soft-spoken resident of Orange County, Vermont, to calm her down when her dreams prove too much.

Zachariah, twenty-three, is a survivor of a different kind. It's been three years since he was tossed aside by the polygamist cult out west, the only home he'd ever known. In Vermont, he's found a peaceful place in the bunkhouse at the Shipley's farm. He's good with animals, and he's good with his hands. But getting thrown away by your own people at nineteen leaves a mark on a guy. And he doesn't always know what to make of a world where apps and movie quotes are the primary means of communication. Before hitchhiking to Vermont, he'd never watched television. He'd never spoken on the phone.

Actually, there are still a lot of things he's never done.

Zach and Lark slowly grow to trust one another. One night they become even closer than they'd planned. But Lark may still be too broken to trust anyone. When she shoves Zach away, he will have to prove to himself that he's good for more than farm labor.

Liked the hero more than the heroine. But I didn't dislike her. She had a bunch of problems that made her just harder to get into. He was a good match for her. These are low angst books with people working out real problems. ( )

I'm ready for Sarina Bowen to change my mind, but as of right now, this is my favorite of all her books. (We can fight it out in the comments if you want.) It's possibly her most over-the-top, as well, since the wealthy, privileged heroine is recovering from being abducted and ransomed while doing non-profit agricultural work and the hero was brought up in a religious cult.

Zachariah has been working for the Shipleys for a while, and since he has no family to go back to, he's in a constant state of worry about his position on the farm. He works hard and tries to be as helpful as possible to convince them to keep him on. He's also the sweetest virgin hero ever.

Lark is one of May Shipley's college friends, a former dare-devil now hoping that some fresh air and manual labor on the Shipley Farm will help chase off her demons. Lark is broken when she arrives, waking up screaming every night. It's awful, reader. Awful.

In the end, though, the book turned out to be one of the most moving stories I've read in a long time. I was sobbing at one point, when Lark leaves the farm to get the intensive therapy she needs. Seeing these two people come together but not able to fix each other was both realistic and heartbreaking. When Bowen guided them to their HEA, I was cheering and crying at the same time.

Zach and Lark.
This is such a sweet book.
Zach is so amazing, he's loyal, he's the strong, silent type.
Lark 'Wild Child' has been through a bad experience and discovering what it involves is part of the story, it's not pleasant but it's not anything too dark.
Zach has had an unusual childhood, he is very inexperienced in the modern world, his innocence is part of his charm. For example he's never used a phone or watched TV so there are lots of jokes around Star Wars.
There are lots of secondary characters who have either been in previous books or are to feature in future.
There is a small amount of ex drama but it doesn't follow the usual route and there are no intimate scenes between anyone other than the Hero and heroine. No cheating, triangle.
My only criticism is that there are 2 characters mentioned, I think it's Leah and Isaac, they have a similar past to Zach and feature in the story quite a lot but I felt as though I missed a book.
They are referred to quite a bit and I would have liked more of their history, even their own book.
I will be looking in to the rest of the series.

There was nothing wrong with this book, but for me, there was nothing particularly right about it either. I didn't find it particularly romantic but I did find it somewhat heart-warming. It was sweet, but it was kind of - meh - boring for me.

I don't think it would be for everyone. Zach is your sweet virgin hero, and he's honest and noble and...well...have I mentioned how these heroes work for me? They don't. Zach was still close, to be honest, because patience and warmth are sexy traits, but it was his voice. It vacillated between the "ohgeegollyshucks," and more modern/typical. And he was deeply Christian. That's not a problem per se, but it doesn't really enhance my enjoyment of the book to read scripture here and there from the hero's perspective. As far as heroes go, I'd strictly friend-zone Zach and probably try to avoid him generally. So there's that.

Lark was cool, but she was going through some stuff and so her development and character was largely built on that. It was hard to get a sense of her for a while due to that, but she was definitely the more interesting of the main characters.

I've been reading this forever, so obviously there was not a real hook into the story for me...And the worst part as that I thought it would mean I was done with the series-or I might have DNF'ed. Turns out there's a fourth book. Oh, that feeling when you think you've wrapped a series but no.

That's all I got. ( )

I really liked this installment in the series. Zach and Lark were two broken souls who met at exactly right time in their lives.
First 80% of the book has dark, but also sweet tone. Then last 20% or so felt like I was reading from the different characters, surprisingly Zach's pov changed to more bold, posessive man, so that thrown me off.
