I was pretty hesitant to read this one. I had heard so much about all the content warnings about this book and when I read the Grisha Trilogy by Bardugo in my senior year of high school I liked the first book but I didn't love the second and third book. I also do not care at all about secret societies and elite universities. I am always somewhat frustrated with our obsession with Ivy League universities because while I'm sure they do a wonderful job educating their students, there can be so much smugness and superiority surrounding the experience of attending one of these schools. However, I think this book really goes far to acknowledge the problems with holding up these universities as the model and what everyone should strive for. I was really impressed with the way this book uses supernatural and magical elements to illustrate the pitfalls and privileges inherent in these universities.

I thought the mystery within this novel was very well done. I didn't see much coming but when pieces were revealed, it made complete sense. I never really had a moment where I was confused or thought something didn't make sense. I tend to steer away from paranormal mysteries and thrillers because I usually like fully magic books or fully realistic mystery books but I thought this one was so well done. Though I don't care about secret societies really at all I thought they fit so well into this book. I think this is because it is based in reality of societies that actually exist at Yale. At the beginning of this I will fully admit that I wasn't super engaged as we were thrown right into the story and I didn't really get what was happening. As the story moved on and we learned more and more about the rules of the societies I was absolutely sucked into the story and the mystery.

I thought the characters of this book were very well realized in this book. When I heard that the main character in this book was named Galaxy Stern I was a little hesitant. I don't like overly stylized and hippy characters so I was a little hesitant. However, as I got to know Alex I really began to appreciate her history and her motivations and the way she viewed the reasons for being at Yale. I liked her relationships with other characters, especially her developing relationship with Dawes as the book went on and they began to rely on each other. This really is Alex's story but there are so many characters that work with her and play off her in such interesting ways and I'd love to see how that continues in the sequels.

I went into this one very hesitantly and ended up really loving it. I would definitely encourage people to look up content warnings for this book but for me, the more alarming content was over very quickly and the book never lingered on anything disturbing unnecessarily, though other people may view this differently so I definitely do what's best for you. I really enjoyed this one and I'm glad Leigh Bardugo has decided to pursue writing adult books because this one was certainly very good. ( )

I never thought that there would be a book which would surpass House of Earth and Blood in terms of plot twists, but here it is.

Ninth House has surpassed all expectations, all imaginations and all thresholds for mini heart attacks.

I am not ready to read Alex Stern 2 yet.

This book deserves a well thought out review, but I don't have it in me.

I do not have the capability or the ability to express my thoughts.

All I can do I post some spoilers from the book.

1. It was one thing to be a murderer, quite another to work for one.
2. All of the books from the collection crowded into the library at one and the floor collapsed on Chester Vance, Oculus.
‌"Jesus, that's horrible."
"I don't know," Darlington had said meditatively. "Suffocating beneath a pile of books seems an appropriate way to go for a research assistant."
3. I class profanities with declarations of love. Best used sparingly and only when wholeheartedly meant.

There are so many other scenes and camaraderie and straight-out murder that's worth quoting, but I'll leave it up to you guys to explore for yourself. ( )

We say "the Veil" but we know there are many Veils, each a barrier between our world and the beyond.....We know too there are many borderlands where the dead may commune with the living... L. Bardugo, Ninth House

When a YA author crosses over to write an Adult novel, in my experience they tread lightly, and the first time out, don't quite make the crossing. Leigh Bardugo has gone full throttle. Do not, I repeat, do not expect anything like her Grishaverse. There are Grays (ghosts) Demons, and really ugly bad people. All of the things I would normally hate about a book. Go figure-I loved it. It was like a pile up on the freeway, when you know you should just move on and stop looking. I couldn't. I had to keep turning the page. I credit this to [a:Leigh Bardugo|4575289|Leigh Bardugo|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1534446099p2/4575289.jpg]'s writing. Just when you think things are getting a little too boring, she hits you with the unexpected and draws you back in.

Galaxy (Alex) Stern is a 20 year old, down on her luck, drug mule and user and the soul survivor of a horrific murder scene in Los Angles. She also can see the dead. A stranger appears at her hospital bed-side and offers her a chance at redemption, a chance for a fresh start and a place in the Yale freshman class. Alex knows there is a catch to all this good fortune, but she jumps at the chance, damn the consequences. That's as much of the story as you will get from me. If you love Horror, this book is for you. If you love a great Mystery, this book is for you. If you can embrace an Alternative World, this book is for you. But, don't say I did not warn you-it is horror, upon horror-but so engrossing and yes entertaining.....

Rarely do I give a book that has so many triggers a 5 star rating-I won't list them, they are all in there. The book itself I give 4 and I hand that last star to Bardugo, for not holding back and producing a book that deserves all the hype and praise that is thrown at it. ( )

Ninth House, by Leigh Bardugo, is a good read for fans of the academia, secrets, and murder in The Secret History, Although where The Secret History skirts into horror to discuss morality of murder and the classical mysteries, Ninth House is more about the privilege powering secret societies. And, instead of just hinting at dark, ancient rituals offstage, Ninth House goes right in.
