As far as chicklit goes, this one was pretty typical of what I want/expect of the genre. The protagonist mostly holds her own and is realistic for the most part. As fantasy-land as it seems, her job as an elite social-lite event planner was actually kind of interesting. (Even though how easily she eased into success in that line of work was fairy-tale-like.)
Too many happy coincidences, though, in the novel. And almost comical how the girl and guy have higher moral standards than everyone around them. The guy is over all too perfect and their relationship goes too smoothly, even with its "bumps."
I haven't read or watched [book:The Devil Wears Prada] but I don't think I want to endure another book coated with such sugar. ( )

Full disclosure: I went into this with a hatred of chick-lit. I had enjoyed the guilty pleasure of The Nanny Diaries, and when my best friend told me she secretly loved chick-lit, I decided to give it a try. My first attempt (from her bookshelf) was deplorable, but I liked The Devil Wears Prada film, so I decided to give the genre a second try.

This book was unbelievably terrible. The shallow, self-absorbed main character, whom we're supposed to believe is interesting enough for everyone to follow her life in the newspaper and qualified enough for her Fabulous job. (And also, women everywhere in Weisberger's world, even highly educated and qualified ones, want Fabulous jobs in fashion and entertainment) The staunch homophobia, with only truly flaming homosexual characters (and all effete men being secretly homosexual) was what really turned me off from this book.

Experiment? Over. ( )

It was ok.

Here's the thing that didn't work for me, I don't think that Bette liked her new job. Sometimes you read a story where the lead character winds up in this glitzy world that they never expected to be part of and for awhile they're having an absolute blast. Then they realize it isn't what they really want.

But Bette fell into this job that requires a lot of hard partying, being available 24/7 and I honestly don't think she ever liked the job. So, why was she so willing to blow off her best friend and her family in order to go party with work friends when she wasn't even having fun?

Someone else may disagree with me, maybe she was having fun. Maybe the author just described the party scene so vividly that I knew it sounded like something that I myself would not enjoy lol. Maybe that's it. But I just felt like Bette did not love her job, or her job "perks" but she was willing to put everyone she did love on the back burner for it.

It wasn't a badly written book, I just had that thought bugging me through the whole book and I'm sure that had an impact on how much I liked the book.

I have never read The Devil Wears Prada, but I did see the movie and LOVED it so I was very excited about reading Everyone Worth Knowing because it is by the same author. Being very girly and very predictable, as most chick-lit books are, this one was just... okay.

Bette is definitely a character that I could see myself being close friends with. She is a perfect mix of the down-to-earth/head-in-the-clouds type of person that I like. The simple fact that her guilty pleasure is her book club devoted to 'Smut' books (Harlequin Romance novels) is great. Personally, those are not my style of book but I could well imagine the shame that would exist if I was (as a young mom in her early thirties) addicted to them.

Up and down, back and forth, here and there... this book was all over the place. From the beginning of each chapter to the end, the mood swings were intense. While it did make me want to read the next chapter, it was slow... I knew what was coming before it was there and just lacked the excitement that I was looking for. Maybe it is because I was imagining the amazing characters/story from The Devil Wears Prada...

Overall, it was a chick-lit book through and through... a worthwhile read but not one that will change my life. I didn't LOOOONG to be any of the characters, but, as I said, would love to be a friend. So, I would prefer to know someone who knows Everyone Worth Knowing.
