(  ) quondame | Nov 29, 2019 | ) gypsysmom | Aug 9, 2017 | This also is my first time reading Mr. Humphreys and I didn’t really know what to expect, and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised by his clear, witty and thoroughly engaging voice. He had managed to put me in the middle of this wonderful adventure. I never heard of the play ‘The Rivals: A Comedy’ which was written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan with Jack Absolute as its main character, so once I realized that the author of that play was Jack’s friend who decided that Jack’s life would make a great story and a play, I was hooked on both, the real and the ‘play’ Jack. Both were immensely charming, funny and entertaining. However, the ‘real’ Jack Absolute was much more complex and three-dimensional. He is a mix of Alpha and Beta heroes with many flaws, but first and foremost, he’s a soldier and a spy, and his specialty is intelligence work. He is handsome and smart, fun to be around and one is never bored in his company. His best friend and companion is a Mohawk, Até and may as well be his shadow as he’s always next to him. Mr. Humphreys has created so many secondary characters that each one was unique and entertaining, almost as much as Jack was. I wasn’t surprised that I enjoyed this novel and if you would ask me under which genre it falls, I’d probably name a few, romance included. This novel was well plotted, written and researched. The author did an outstanding job in characterization of almost every character in the novel. I would have been sad to leave Jack and his world, if I didn’t have ‘The Blooding of Jack Absolute’ waiting to be read, and that should be a treat as it’s a prequel to this book. ( ) bookworm2bookworm | Mar 30, 2017 | Excellent pacing, colorful writing, a dashing plot full of twists, turns, cliff hangers, battles, intrigues, chases, duels, Indians, Jacobites, rattlesnakes, spies, invisible ink, romance, sex, secret societies, and many reverses. The story is skillfully framed around historical events and there is a convincing treatment of historical figures mixed deftly with the fictional characters. I "absolutely" loved the main conceit, that Sheridan's character in The Rivals Jack Absolute, was based on a real figure and said figure returns to London after many years to find the play a smash hit and his name a household word. I admired the many facets of the hero--warrior, actor, duelist, lover, spy, sometime British officer, adopted Iroquois brave, an admirable combination of bravado and self-reflection. I especially loved his faithful Indian companion, Ate, with his terse manners and his penchant for quoting Hamlet. Unfortunately, the denouement of the book was awful. The forcibly contrived ending was bad enough, but the sudden change in tone and direction, disappointing reader expectations that had been built up for almost 300 pages, is indeed a cardinal sin for a novel of this type. In his afterword, the very talented author seems to indicate that his publishers had some hand in approving the idea of the book. Too bad they did not give him better advice about the ending.
