Research on children of concentration camp survivors has presented investigators with a multiplicity of challenges in addressing fundamental questions connected with being a survivor's child. Is there a common denominator among children whose parents were survivors of Nazi persecution? Is there any specificity in regard to their strengths, character traits, psychopathologies or symptomotology? The Legacy of the Holocaust: Pychohistorical Themes in the Second Generation is an important extension of the previous research, in that it circumvents the cause/ effect 'linear analysis' usually applied to understanding children of survivors and their parents' experiences of survivorhood. Prince, a child of survivors himself, utilizes a more complex methodology, based on Spiegel's 'transactional model, ' taking into account the interdependent relationships between people and events and the influences that mediate them. Prince attempts to understand the lives of children of Holocaust survivors (who are themselves the age that their parents were when they were subject to that horror) by examining their psyche within the context of historical events. In addition, he presents three compelling case studies: A Powerful Sufferer/A Nazi Fighter/A Jewish American Princess that movingly highlight salient themes of the second generation.
