"In this collection of poetry, Nikki Grimes looks afresh at the poets of the Harlem Renaissance -- including voices like Langston Hughes, Georgia Douglas Johnson, and many more writers of importance and resonance from this era -- by combining their work with her own original poetry. Using "The Golden Shovel" poetic method, Grimes has written a collection of poetry that is as gorgeous as it is thought-provoking. This special book also includes original artwork in full-color from some of today's most exciting African American illustrators, who have created pieces of art based on Nikki's original poems. Featuring art by: Cozbi Cabrera, R. Gregory Christie, Pat Cummings, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Nikki Grimes, E. B. Lewis, Frank Morrison, Brian Pinkney, Sean Qualls, James Ransome, Javaka Steptoe, Shadra Strickland, and Elizabeth Zunon. A foreword, an introduction to the history of the Harlem Renaissance, author's note, poet biographies, and index makes this not only a book to cherish, but a wonderful resource and reference as well"--… (mehr)

this poetry book is written about the ages and events of the Harlem Renaissance and how at the time there was very little racial equality. During this historical event, African American artists, writers, and musicians made works of art in relation to their culture. each poem is filled with similar works of literature written by artists during this time. not only does it feature works of literature, but works of art as well. The author Nikki Grimes uses the famous "golden shovel method" which takes the first word of each line and uses that same word at the end of the line. It is very beneficial to teach historical moments and events such as the Harlem Renaissance, not only in the history class, but also in literature, because it can go more in-depth about how life was lived back then and in that time and the culture is more described. "I Leave the Glory Days" by Nikki Grimes.
An engaging poem of realization about being hopeful. That and having 'the stuff' to make it in this day. ( )

An amazing book of poetry telling the story of the Harlem Renaissance using poems by Harlem Renaissance greats, such as Langston Hughes, in combination of her own poems. This book is illustrated by award winning African American illustrators like Brian Pinkney.

A deep and rich collection of poems which tells the story of black people's struggles through poetry. Nikki Grimes seems to attempt to uplift black people and remind her audience to be proud. ( )
