He's been deployed in the Navy for most of her young life. When Sara's mom tells her that her father's coming home, Sara is faced with anxiety and guilt. However, things change when she sees her father. My father was in the Navy as well, and my mother read this to me when I was young. McKinley does a great job of breaking a complication issue into a story a child can understand and relate to. ( ) My Father is in the Navy is a book about a young girl whose father is in the Navy. The girl's father has been deployed for some time now and she does not have any real memories of him. Her mother informs her that her father is coming home, but the girl cannot get excited about it. She feels like she really does not know her father. Once she is reunited with her father, she remembers him and is happy he is home. While I really like the idea behind the book, I felt like the plot of the book could have been better. The plot was underwhelming and I felt like the book abruptly ended once the girl's father returned home because she suddenly remembered him. Sara doesn't know her father. He has been gone for a really long time in the navy. One day her mom says, "Daddy is coming home!" Sara was not excited. They get dressed nice and drive far away. When she sees her dad in real life, she remembers him. She was so happy. This book will help reassure children whose parents are both near and far.
