As an audiobook it didn't grab my attention and so I was always losing the thread of it. It seemed to be a pale imitation of a cross between Lorelei James and Suzanne Brockmann. I realise I"m not being fair but it's too long since I read something original and fresh, I'm unfortunately getting jaded and impatient. ( ) First off I messed up and read the 2nd book in the series before this one so some of this was spoiled for me. Three brothers return home to their Texas ranch under mysterious circumstances. Each a warrior in their own right having followed their SEAL father's foot steps. But why are they brought home, where's daddy dearest and who the hell is trying to kill them? We meet the middle son, Owen, a Navy SEAL who was pulled from his latest mission and dropped off in the front yard of the family ranch. Shortly after his two brothers, Wyatt and Cullen, join him. The aunt and uncle who have been caring for the ranch have been murdered and their father Enter Callie, a young woman Orrin has taken under his wing and treated like a daughter, and Natalie, she's Owen high school love who's heart he broke when he left after graduation without any explanation. Callie has some information that will shock the brothers, their dad has retired from active duty and has been running secret Ops with his own Elite team. Natalie was asked by Orrin to snoop around the Russian Embassy where she works to see if she could find anything on something called Ragnarok and if she does to contact him immediately. As expected Natalie finds something, Orrin and his men go in to retrieve what turns out to be a biological weapon....but something goes horribly wrong. The team is killed and Orrin is missing. As each son comes to terms with that fact the decision is made....save dad and get the weapon. Natalie and Owen are fighting another battle, their attraction to each other. Owen realizes that 14 years earlier he walked away from the one person he should have held onto the tightest. She is the other half of his soul. Natalie has never really gotten over Owen, her marriage failed because he wasn't Owen and she couldn't love him like she did Owen. Her heart never forgot no matter how much her brain tried to convince her otherwise. Injected here and there are scenes from a dark cell where Orrin is being held and tortured. We also find out who it is that betrayed him. So much for old friends. Yuri, a Russian general and "friend" is leading the beatings and loving every minute of it. Orrin has every confidence his sons will get the information Callie has, accept her help and keep Ragnarok out of the wrong hands. It's those thoughts that let him take his beatings without showing too much pain. A plan is formed. Cullen is going to meet with Carter, Mia Carter, she is the pilot who flew Orrin and the team to get the weapon out of Russia. The last one to see any of them alive. Wyatt and Callie are going on the road to do some searching and get information on who the possible players might be in this whole thing. An elite and shadow group known only as The Saints is brought up. There is no trace of them but they definitely exist. It may include an ambassador and a former KGB officer. Oh and they have ordered a hit on Natalie. Owen and Natalie will stay at the ranch using the secret bunker Orrin installed and see what they can find out about this weapon. We have chases, gun fights, fist fights with the bad guys on the losing end of it all. By the end we know who created the weapon and that he's defected to the US. We know Cullen and Mia are out of contact but not exactly sure why. Wyatt is coming to terms that Callie has some serious skills. Still wondering why they get along like oil and water....hmm? And yes, after one too many attempts on her life Natalie starts to believe Owen when he tells her he made a major mistake leaving her and that he never stopped loving her. He wants to see what kind of future they could have and that he does indeed love her more than anything. And since I read book 2 before this one guess it's on to the last of the series. Good thing is now some of the stuff in the 2nd book make a little more sense. LOL The Hero is a second-chance romance and while the plot is incredibly far-fetched and unrealistic, I still enjoyed it. I admit, I didn't care much for the romance but I loved the suspense. As for the Loughman brothers well, I loved them and can't wait to read more about them - especially Wyatt! *I do want to note that it does end on a cliffhanger to be continued with [b:The Protector|29875933|The Protector (Sons of Texas, #2)|Donna Grant|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1474807525s/29875933.jpg|50248704] and [b:The Legend|31450827|The Legend (Sons of Texas, #3)|Donna Grant|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1482793571s/31450827.jpg|52153679]. Where to begin... This is not my usual genre, I'm a kilts and swords kinda girl, but since Donna Grant deviated, I figured so would I. And I'm glad I did! Owen and Natalie are well matched, you can just feel the sparks as you're reading. I had no problem envisioning what was happening, from the fight scenes to the shootouts and beyond, I was glued to the page. It has action, suspense, intrigue and of course, romance. Wyatt and Callie have piqued my curiosity and can't wait for their story. (Book 3!) They are so at odds with each there has to be a humdinger of a backstory. She gives a few clues but nothing substantial. They all have had their share of heartbreak so you just want every one of them to have a happy ending! *** I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review through Bookstr.com*** Where to begin...
