Spider-Man (2016-) #2 - Brian Bendis, Sara Pichelli
Just fabulous. Bendis is doing a fantastic job fleshing Miles out, and having it be harder for him to balance his two lives. In the Avengers books, it's harder to show this long term: you're dealing with what is normally a larger threat and then you're dealing with a larger cast of characters.
To get as intimate as this series is with one character demands a solo title, and Bendis has shown himself just as adept as larger casts as with one-person titles. This is no exception. he also deals with timely issues, such as race. When someone videos Miles as Spider-Man with a ripped mask, she realizes he is, as she says, of color. She's very excited: black Cap, lady Thor and now a Spider-Man of color. (This vlogger is of color, which is why she's so excited about all the representation.) Mile is upset - but not for the reason you might think. It's not that someone's closer to finding out who he is: they don't know if he's black, hispanic, what. (His father is black and his mother of hispanic descent, so he's a mix by the way.) That's not what bothers him, but the qualifier is. He doesn't want to be the black Spider-Man or the hispanic Spider-Man, he just wants to be Spider-Man. See, he's not doing this to represent, although he does. He's just doing this because he's truly got a good heart and wants to help. (And the fact that it's kinda super awesome is just a bonus.) That being said, the difference in being on the inside and outside is clearly defined her: from the outside, people want the qualifier. They want to look at superheroes and see themselves. Not surprising given how white the Marvel universe has been for a long time. From the inside, Miles just sees more experienced super-hereos, and himself. He wants to stand on his own, all qualifiers be damned.
It's an interesting dichotomy and I hope this isn't all we see of this issue pop up in this series.
